15 hrs per week, how does it work?

If I was to employ someone for 15 hrs per week over 3 days, what is the norm for a contact with regards holidays and bank holidays. We are able to be entirely flexible but we would need to know in advance which days were to be worked. Does anyone have any experience or advice?

Will you be giving statutory holidays with the bank holidays included within that figure or will you be giving more than that?

For working 3 days the entitlement would be 16.8 days per year (can be rounded up but not down). Bank holidays can be included in that figure or you can give more if you choose .

You offer the same amount as ft employee on a pro rata basis as hours. So 5 weeks leave would be 75 hours. Then deduct 5 hours for each day taken. Do you normally count bh within total leave or in addition?

Yes to pro rata annual leave and bank holidays but be aware that if they are required to work on Mondays, they might need to use some of their annual leave to cover that or come into work on a bank holiday if it falls on a Monday.

Minimum is 5.6 weeks leave. But yes, also look at what full time employees get and then give 3/5 of that to the person working only 3 days

ok that's helpful thank you. We have 20 days holiday plus bank holidays

Calculate their bank hol allowance and leave pro rata in hours. Makes everything much simpler. Give them a total number of hours which need to cover both bank hols that fall on their work days and annual leave.

There will be some minor variations in how much of their leave is effectively fixed by bank hols (if you close the office on bank hols), and how much is variable like annual leave. Generally PT workers who don't work Mondays tend to gain a little more flexibility and those who work Mondays may lose a little, compared with FT workers, but the overall amount is equivalent.

So you basically give the statutory minimum of 28 days then. The above calculation of 16.8 days is correct then. As a pp said, if the person works on a Monday and would be off for a bank holiday then that would come out of the holiday hours given above. Those not working on a Monday would therefore have more choice about when to take their days off but would still get the same amount of total holiday
