Anti reflux formula - am I doing it right??? HELP

My 7 week old baby has been diagnosed with acid reflux and we have been given infant gaviscon. She would have breast milk or ebm.

I have now gone and brought hipp anti reflux formula in the hope it would help her. I have the desired temperature for the water and leave it in a Flask then when she stirs for a feed I will add it to a bottle and add the formula. Sometimes I don't wait the 7 minutes, is this dangerous or harmful?? What is the purpose for waiting? Please help!

Is the 7 mins instruction for the formula or the Gavsicon?
When I used gaviscon it was use immediately when mixed into formula.
My DD’s reflux was caused by cows milk allergy, anti reflux milk made no difference.

If it’s the same as the Cow & Gate anti-reflux formula, the seven minutes is to let the formula thicken up, which I think is supposed the lessen the amounts they bring back up with reflux.
Good luck - my now 13 week old is also on gaviscon, but was eventually diagnosed with cows milk protein allergy as the cause of his reflux.

The 7 minutes is for the formula. How did you find the gaviscon? It'll be my 3rd day with it but so far I just feel its s bit of a faff as I'm using it in expressed milk

Thank you for the clarification. When she did have the milk straight away she seemed fine after it so I'm hoping it was OK. Did you use the formula for night time feeds?

Anti reflux formula is basically just thick formula. It’s a total con, by all means introduce formula if you want to but you’re no more likely to get better results than continuing to breastfeed, giving the gaviscon or going back to the GP for something else of that doesn’t work.

If you didn’t see it the Dispatches programme had some good info on how the formula companies try to differentiate themselves when in reality the law means all formula is nearly identical

WhenZogateSuperworm · 04/05/2019 07:04

Don’t swap to formula unless a medical professional has told you too- in which case it should be a prescription formula.

Make the Gaviscon with 15ml water and bottle or syringe feed it. If she won’t take it then mix the 15ml water solution with a little expressed milk and bottle feed.

If you are struggling with the Gaviscon then see your GP and ask for Ranitidine. It’s 0.5ml 3 times a day so a tiny amount to syringe in.

We struggled with gaviscon as it made her constipated. We went back to the GP who prescribed ranitidine and it's been a dream x

I feel like I'm mentally struggling with breastfeeding because I feel like she doesn't get enough and prefers the bottle, I would rather express and ensure she gets it that way. She always chokes up when breastfeeding and with the acid reflux it's made me more scared because I want her to get a good feed

What did ranitidine do? I heard it has some effect on renal function? How effective was it for your baby?

Ranitidine is a reflux medication, it is commonly prescribed for infants.

Firsttimemomma · 04/05/2019 21:16

I've managed to get a prescription of the ranitidine and after several searches we've tracked down a pharmacy which has it in stock. Do you give the ranitidine before or after a feed?

Ours is 0.5ml three times a day. It tastes horrid so I give it straight before a feed to take the taste away.

Firsttimemomma · 05/05/2019 07:27

So is ours but I give it after a feed. I've stopped using anti reflux formula, it was too much of a faff. Thank you so much for your help, it's nice to know there are others in the same position x

Some babies manage to guzzle even when breastfeeding.
Just try to unlatch her (clean little finger inserted into her mouth when feeding) and wind her half way through. Which will give her a break from feeding and hopefully help with the choking up milk.

It’s also a myth that breastfed babies don’t need winding if you’ve been told that.
Keep her upright after a feed for a bit and try to get a burb out of her.

That should also help with her reflux

Hi! Also to add, could you have a faster down which is why your LO is spluttering? Try leaning back slightly when feeding.
Just a thought too.. my niece was diagnosed with CMPA and they went dairy and soya free, only to find it was a posterior tongue tie which was the problem; which was causing reflux!
I hope the ranitidine helps, reflux is horrible!

WhenZogateSuperworm · 05/05/2019 21:18

My DD gulps when breastfeeding and is very windy. I have a fast let down which makes her splutter and take in air.
