If you had a dribbly baby, how many dribble bibs would they go through in one day?

4 month old is being investigated for his excess dribbling (amongst other things).

I think I can explain most issues away but I can't deny that his dribbling is excessive.

I just wondered how normal it was compared to others.
My first DC was very dribbly (but not this much!) second DC never dribbled.

This little one soaks through 15-18 funky giraffe bibs between 6am and 7pm.

Does anyone else's DC do the same amount?

I'm basically hoping that it might be normal, despite what the HCP's are saying.

I thought I had a dribbler but never went through more than 5 or 6. You must do endless washing! I hope you find a resolution.

happydays00 · 03/05/2019 20:13

Yes, I also had a dribbler but I think 6-7 was about the max!

fizzybubblepop · 03/05/2019 20:15

I have had a very dribbly baby but never went through that many bibs. I would say 10 was probably the most in a day. He is still quite dribbly now and he's 2 1/2.

On a very dribbly day mine went through up to about 8 a day, tops I'd say

BestBeforeYesterday · 03/05/2019 20:19

About 7 or 8 bibs
What exactly could be the cause for excess dribbling?

MrsFrTedCrilly · 03/05/2019 20:20

I had a real dribbler he definitely went through about 12-15 bibs a day. Saw my nephew recently, he’s exactly the same at 18m. Hope all is well with your LO OP.

SoyDora · 03/05/2019 20:23

My 4 month old is DC3 and is by far the dribbliest of all my babies. We get through 3/4 dribble bibs a day.
What do they think the issue could be?

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 03/05/2019 21:00

What exactly could be the cause for excess dribbling?

I have absolutely no idea.
He has cardiac issues so they are investigating that tomorrow and again next week via surgery.
But they said the dribbling isn't a symptom of that and it's more likely to be ENT related so he's having a camera into his nose while we are having his heart investigated.

I've googled but didn't really get much.

Which is why I still think it's excessive but normal - until proven otherwise I suppose.

Bump just in case anyone's experienced it and knows what might cause it.

@MrsFrTedCrilly
Was your DC like it since birth?
When did the dribbling start to calm down?

A friends little one is very dribbly and they have found his tonsils are far too big and are going to be removed.

My Dd dribbled constantly until she was 3. They found no cause and she eventually grew out of it. I used the plastic backed bibs mostly.

FenellaMaxwell · 04/05/2019 10:13

About 8? He’s 2 now and doesn’t need one every day but on dribbly days probably 2-3?

SwayingInTime · 04/05/2019 10:15

Same as the others for my dribbly baby. My year 6 daughter has a friend who dribbled excessively until he had his tonsils out a couple of years ago.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 04/05/2019 10:42

My eldest was quite dribbly and would soak between 4 - 8 bibs a day. It did ease off but even now (age 8) he can drool if distressed.
My youngest never needed a dribble bib.

QueenOfTheEighthKingdom · 04/05/2019 11:01

One of mine has very large tonsils but didn't dribble. Youngest has unremarkable tonsils but was a terrible dribbler until about aged 3. He used to literally leave puddles on the floor when sitting in one place for any length of time. He also had a stutter which resolved itself at around the same time, not sure if related. I used the triangular, very thick towelling bibs and needed to change every few hours. Queried it several times with GP as worried about him getting dehydrated (he wasn't) but no answers and he didn't show any signs of it affecting him.

complicat3d · 04/05/2019 11:01

I had a really dribbly baby. He's still a bit drooly now at 7. Don't know why

But I think I found this tip here. I used to dress him like this

Vest
Plastic backed bib
Babygrow/t-shirt
Dribble bib/cloth bib

It meant I could whip off the dribble bib when it got really wet and didn't have to fully change him as he was starting to get rashes on his chest from being soaked through and needing a full change every hour.

SwayingInTime · 05/05/2019 06:27

Also there's probably better available now but there are flexible plastic bibs with a fleece front (silly billyz?) that are less stiff and 'flicky uppy' than a normal one.

Zillaindie · 05/05/2019 06:35

My twins were awful with dribbling.

A site called The Monkey Box was my saviour as they worked out cheaper than FG and more absorbent. We went through 8-10 each at the worse times however would easily go through 20 FG ones.

Never had it investigated however they are now 15 months old and hardly have dribbly days now. Calmed down after their front teeth came through.

ittakes2 · 05/05/2019 06:57

My children have brushing therapy for their infant reflexes not going dormant and their therapist said excessive dribbling can be a sign of a child’s infant reflex not going dormant. But your baby is still an infant - if they are still dribbling excessively for months than maybe worth looking into. The brushing only takes 5mins a day and I can see the positive affects.

ImogenTubbs · 05/05/2019 10:15

My DD was like this. I often had to put a waterproof food bib on to protect her clothes/skin and then a dribble bib over the top which I changed as needed, sometimes every ten minutes. It was pretty gross. I blamed teething. It passed.

I have an extremely dribbly baby - hence seeing your old post. Did the dribbling ease up? Any medical cause found? Hope all is OK. X

blubberball · 26/12/2022 06:16

My ds dribbled excessively and was always soaked through. The health visitors picked up on it amongst other things at his 2.5 year check. He wasn't hitting his mile stones, and he was found to have weak core muscles and tongue tie, as well as many other issues.

Hope your babies are OK.
