Is this chicken alright?

Bought on Monday (29th April) from Asda, straight home and into fridge, use by 6th May.

Opened tonight, still vacuum packed tight (not blown) perfectly normal appearance - but had a faint smell. A bit more than just a bit "chickeny", enough that I could smell it on the tongs I used to put them in the pan, but it disappeared after about a minute of starting to cook and then they smelt normal.

That's alright innit?

No sorry. I am well relaxed. Cooking to the right temp will kill bacteria BUT I just would not enjoy it thinking of that more than chickeny smell. Can you get a takeaway??

wowfudge · 03/05/2019 18:51

Yes. Absolutely fine.

Not alright.
It's dead!!

Most meat has a strong smell when you've just opened the packet. It dissipates after a short time, just as the OP experienced.

Meat always has a smell when is first opened. If the smell goes away then its fine to eat

I don't normally sniff too hard as I'm very paranoid about such things, I won't sniff it right out of the pack - but yeah, I could smell it in the pan and I did sniff the tongs. It actually smelled slightly fishy - it wasn't overpowering or rank, and it disappeared once they started to brown (these were boneless thigh fillets).

They're in a casserole which is going to cook at 180 c for 75 mins. Even so...

DH says don't be bloody silly they're fine.

If I were to swerve the chicken (DH will eat it), will it have contaminated the entire casserole? There is heaps of veg and potato to enjoy.
