What age did you start dying your hair?

For those who dye their hair to cover greys, what age did you have to start?

I think I'm going to have to admit defeat and start getting my hair dyed but I'm only 32 and didn't expect this to be an issue until at least nearer my 40s. I'm curious to know if I've started to go grey quite early or if this is normal?

Had been hoping to hold off for as long as possible as it is an expense I could do without but they are getting more and more visible every day it seems!

Thanks for any replies.

i started going grey at 18! mine grows in just one streak at the front though so it’s not too hard to hide if i skip a hairdressers appointment. my mum also started going grey at 20 and she just uses a box dye every 4 weeks or so. i have my hair dyed professionally but only because i have my hair dyed ginger and couldn’t upkeep that colour myself.

NorthEndGal · 03/05/2019 10:05

I started at 19, experimented with various colours through my twenties, did the henna thing in my thirties, now all dye free at 41.
I am starting to get my silvers and they are gorgeous, like little sparkly highlights.
No way I'm covering that up!

Started going grey at 17 but haven’t had my hair coloured in over a year. I’m naturally quite fair and have a pretty cool silver streak at the front so I’m letting nature take its course for now

Oh and I’m now 38 (nearly 39)

30 and I felt cheated as my mother and grandmother had luscious dark hair well into their 50s.

Clutterfreeintraining · 03/05/2019 10:09

I started at 18 too. Dyed it occasionally through my 20s and regularly (every 4-6weeks) from about 28.
At 36 I stopped dyeing it and it was one of the most liberating things I've done Blush!!

I started dying in mid 20s due to greys. By 30, I had to dye every 8 weeks or so (box dye)which gradually got more frequent. I even dyed through pregnancy Blush. By 40s was dying every 4 weeks and could see white regrowth after a week or so. By 45 I stopped dying and am now a very nice silver. I get lots more compliments than I ever did, and it's much less hassle, plus hair is better condition.

Bobmcbob · 03/05/2019 10:14

37

Adversecamber22 · 03/05/2019 10:15

I dyed my hair from about 35 but became allergic to hair dye when I was in my forties. I also knew a woman who dyed her hair for a couple of years and became allergic, she was only in her twenties.

I did home dyes at first but almost all those years were salon visits every six weeks at £50. If I had travelled to the city close by it would have been £75.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 03/05/2019 10:15

I'm 33 and I've stopped dying my hair because I can't keep up with the grey anymore. Just gonna grow it out!

WanderingTrolley1 · 03/05/2019 10:16

Sun In at 17. Covering greys started at about 30.

elQuintoConyo · 03/05/2019 10:16

Lots of colours during adolescence. Mid-brown/dark brown from 19yo to cover greys. I stopped at 38yo, I just could not be arsed anymore.

Now it's 80% ish white, darker underneath, a kind of ash-blonde on top! Lovely, and gets lots of compliments. I'm 44.

virtuallyreal · 03/05/2019 10:23

Thanks for all the replies!

Definitely not as uncommon as I thought then for my age, that's reassuring.

If I start then I will definitely need to get it done at a salon as I'm a natural red head and would want as close a match as possible to my true colour. Will see if I can hold off longer.

Does anyone know if it's true that if you pull grey hairs out it causes more to grow? I've always assumed it is just a myth as I don't see how it could be true but if it is then I've definitely been making things worse for myself!

Here we go....

Not sure about pulling hairs out, I don't remember more sprouting up but it has been 25 years!

theclockticksslowly · 03/05/2019 10:26

Having the exact same dilemma! Hadn’t thought I’d go grey in my 30s but finding more and more little white hairs.

I’m also hoping the pulling out grey thing is a myth Blush

Pigsinduvets · 03/05/2019 10:36

Been dying hair regularly since about 30. First grey was 21 though. Now in 40s and due to the recent research about correlation between regular use of hair dye and increased risk of breast cancer I have cut it to every 3 months and am considering stopping altogether. It’s only one piece of research and so far it’s a link rather than confirmed causal factor but with breast cancer in my family I do not want to increase risk.

@virtuallyreal I find if I pull them out they tend to grow upwards like a grey antenna so they stand out more.

Myopinionsaremine · 03/05/2019 10:43

I think I must be very lucky as I'm 49 and never dye mine I have a few grey hairs at front my hair is very dark brown. I was going to have front of my hair dyed and my hairdresser said it was ridiculous as I only have a few 🤔

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 03/05/2019 10:57

Started dyeing my hair for fun at 15, became a necessity at 17. My grey hair isn't pretty, the whole of my temple area is grey but nowhere else. It makes me look really old - had a period of not dyeing a couple of years ago due to condition of hair and hated it.

Deathraystare · 03/05/2019 11:13

TBH I have dyed my hair since I was 11 - not cos of greys. I have just continued now because of greys!

fedoff · 03/05/2019 11:23

I'm 40 now and have been going grey since I was 19 - if left I get a huge white stripe in my hair and around my temples. Part of me thinks fuck it just leave it but part of me is still a bit vain and I dye it every 6 weeks or so. My 26 year old (male) cousin has been completely grey since he was about 23.

skippy67 · 03/05/2019 12:37

52 this year, and I've never dyed mine. Got a few greys coming in, so I might start colouring it soon.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 03/05/2019 12:37

I haven't seen my own colour since I was 13, I'm tempted to grow out the dye to see what's underneath as I have no clue.
