If your DC's school was closed for voting today....

....is it also closed on 23 May for European elections?

We haven't had elections here today (London) but I'm trying to work out how busy some of the theme parks might be on the 23rd May when DS's school will be closed.

Thanks!

If it's any help DS' school is never shut for polling day (Wales) and there is Oakwood theme park in Pembrokeshire - bit far but I reckon might be an option. Maybe others could advise.....

Yes and another local school is closed for both. It’s causing me a real childcare headache.

I genuinely don’t understand why they don’t vary the location/use community centres or social clubs etc.

Sorry...not the point of your post...just went off on my own little rant there Blush

It's something to do with who owns the building, which is why schools are used, apparently.

captainpantbeard · 02/05/2019 20:47

Yes, shut today and potentially on the 23rd depending on the elections going ahead.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 02/05/2019 20:49

Yep shut for both. Definitely pain for childcare.

GrandmaSharksDentures · 02/05/2019 21:36

Interesting that schools do shut for both elections. That must cause childcare headaches for families, we're lucky with just the one day then.

Sounds like the theme parks might be quite busy then - sadly Pembrokeshire is probably too far for a day trip from London!! Smile

I genuinely don’t understand why they don’t vary the location/use community centres or social clubs etc.

I asked this before and the reply I got was that school buildings are usually owned by local authorities so they are free to use.

They are complicit with health and safety rules, are secure and usually with disabled access.

They are also usually central in the community and easily accessible so no-one is hindered from voting due to location.

Sirzy · 02/05/2019 22:40

No they have got permission to use the seperate nursery building so only they need to shut

Redshoeblueshoe · 02/05/2019 22:45

I have one relative that is off on both days, but where I voted today although in a school it's a little side building, so school carried on as normal.
I think if you are going to a theme park it will be busier than a normal school day, but much quieter than a weekend.
Although I'm sure some people will have been to theme parks today, so they will be able to give you a better picture

Ds was off school today for voting. Took him to Alton towers and it was fairly quiet. Longest que for the big rides was 15/20 minutes

Redshoeblueshoe · 03/05/2019 00:00

That's great littlebean my DD wants to go there at the European elections Grin

Littlebean13 · 03/05/2019 00:13

Redshoe would recommend it, we had a brilliant day.
My only advice would be to keep an eye on the weather before you go. It rained on and off most of the day today so I'm not sure if maybe that put a few people off and that's why it was quieter than we expected.
Plus when I looked at the app for queue times in the afternoon when the weather was at its worst, three of the big rides had closed.

Redshoeblueshoe · 03/05/2019 00:20

Thanks little. My DD would actually be taking one of her DC's so I don't care what the weather is like Grin
