Is it worth trying a gluten free diet? My 15 dd has tummy pain since medication gave her acute gastritis in Dec/jan.

She had to go onto Sertraline and the fluoxetine for her MH. They caused gastritis so she came off and was given Lansoprazole for3 months to help her gut repair.
She is still experiencing tummy ache after she eats.
Especially if she had white bread at least twice in the day.
I’m happy to try but not sure where to start.
Easy recipes or websites recommendations.

Sounds like you need a gastro appt to see why her gut hasn't fully healed yet.

Prebiotics, collagen and bone broth are all gut healing. Ditching gluten and dairy may be helpful, as they are inflammatory.
There's a great Facebook page called Just For Tummies who have brilliant advice for all sorts of stomach related issues.

I became lactose intolerant after a gastro bug

Thanks everyone.
The drs are reluctant to refer saying having a camera down her throat is unpleasant and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
Saying this to a highly anxious person wasn’t great.

@MrsMaryMooFace
Is that a sponsored fb Page?
I’ve tried to find it.

If you're concerned she may be coeliac DO NOT cut out gluten yet. The gut will start to heal (which yes, is a good thing) but then the coeliac won't show on any tests and so you'll go back to her eating gluten which will destroy the gut again and you'll be in the same place.

If you think it's just an intolerance then go for cutting out/reducing things especially the white bread. The way bread is made in batches is quicker than it used to be and so the yeast doesn't have as much time to fully prove and can continue to do so in the nice warm gut which can cause bloating and pains. Try baking your own or going to a proper bakers if you want to experiment.

I had the camera down the throat thing (as have most of my coeliac family) and was pretty heavily sedated so didn't feel/remember a thing. Sore throat when I woke up for a few hours but that was it. I'm guessing they're saying no because they've done blood tests which come back clear? Mine came back clear 8 times before finally one was borderline and they agreed to further investigation. I think all but one of my family members had bloods negative for coeliac but now 8 of us have official diagnoses

Antidepressants are well known for causing indigestion and in people with naturally sensitive stomachs gastritis, I am on Seroxat and take Lansoprazole to prevent any wear of my stomach lining and overproduction of acid. Apparently you shouldn’t take Sertraline with Proton Pump Inhibitors but I know you can with Fluxotine.
I had a camera down my throat 20 odd years ago, the NHS wasn’t too keen on sedating me for the procedure, they wanted to numb my throat, my anxiety wouldn’t have coped with that so I went private for the procedure. If you can afford it I suggest you take that route. Gastroenterologist and nurses couldn’t have been kinder, I was heavily sedated and i can’t remember a thing about the procedure.
It really does make you feel miserable, I hope your DD feels better soon.
Oh avoid spicy and greasy foods, caffeine, chocolate and unbelievably tomatoes. Google gastritis diet, great info online

And an alkaline diet helps heal the stomach lining and balance out acidity.
Also Manuka honey, high strength, 3 teaspoons a day.

musicposy · 02/05/2019 09:09

The camera down your throat is not unpleasant; they can sedate you and you've virtually no idea anything's been done. I've had 4 Endoscopies now and the worst I had was a bit of a sore throat the next day. I think your GP is just trying not to have to refer.

Don't cut out gluten until you have a coeliac blood test done and get the results of that through. If you cut it out the blood tests won't show it and if she does need the endoscopy the hut will have started to heal and you'll not get the proper diagnosis.

ihatethecold · 02/05/2019 20:22

There’s no way she will have a blood test unfortunately.
She struggles just to go to the drs for a routine appointment.
The issues with her gut were caused by medication for depression.
The dr gave her lansoprazole in Dec and she stopped sertraline quite quickly. Then she had a 6 week gap and started fluoxetine and the gastritis flared up again within a week.
She stopped the medication straight away but had to continue the proton inhibitors for a further 2 months.
She’s on no medication now but still has tummy ache often after eating. She has to eat little and often now.

Just don’t give her white bread twice a day if it’s upsetting her stomach. She’ll recover.

MrsMaryMooFace · 02/05/2019 22:46

Sorry, it's the group you'll want, Tummy Talk. Really helpful Smile

ihatethecold · 03/05/2019 09:51

Thanks Mary.
