What would you do with a 6 week holiday?

How would you fill 6 weeks off work?

I’m a teacher, starting to think about what to do when summer break comes! Got married a couple of years ago, last year moved house. No big event this year! No kids, and husband will probably take a couple of weeks off during that.

Planning! Get ahead for sept! Chill, watch daytime tv, catch up with friends, read books

HundredYearOldMan · 01/05/2019 22:12

There will definitely be some planning! I would do all of the above as well.

Sign up for walkmydoggy...

yoursworried · 01/05/2019 22:13

A bit of planning and an awesome holiday in South East Asia or South America! This is what I used to do before I had kids Grin

HundredYearOldMan · 01/05/2019 22:15

Ooh I did borrowmydoggy last year actually. I could do that again!

South East Asia is on my list. I should really get on with my list before I have kids 🤣

Head to Oz.

redredrobins · 01/05/2019 23:11

go to Canada

NaomifromMilkshake · 01/05/2019 23:20

Not really sure, but I can tell you one day very early on would involve sleeping and then sleeping and then sleeping some more, then having a glass of wine, because you want one, not because it is wine o clock, then settle down and catch up on all your catch up TV.

Stand up at about 5.00 pm ish, have a shower, go out for an early bird, come home, watch shite TV, go to bed when you fancy it and then wake up, when up when you wake up the next day ( no alarm)and THEN channel your inner grown up.

I am now very jealous. Grin

Because once you have children, lovely as they are, the gig is up.

Walk the Lycian Way in Turkey
Sort out, box and label all my old photos.
Sort out cupboards, drawers and loft full of crap: triage it: bin, charity shop, eBay.
Go camping
Go to loads of galleries
Go to Vietnam (so cheap to love once you get there)
Go swimming every day (Lido) cook fresh healthy food so get fit and lose weight .

peanutbutterismydownfall · 01/05/2019 23:37

By the time you've recovered from the summer term, done your prep and spent 2 weeks with your DH, you've only got about 3 weeks. I'd do a mixture of meeting up with friends (particularly ones who live a few hours away) and doing odd bits of DIY and sorting in the house & garden. It will fly by.
Or just get in a plane to South America or Africa as soon as term finishes and stay there for 6 weeks travelling around.

MadeinBelfast · 02/05/2019 00:15

Go to the cinema in the middle of the day.
Read a book outside in the sun.
See friends you've not seen all term-time!
Set aside a week to do all the boring stuff - dentist, optician etc.
Get a cheap hotel in a nice city and wander about stopping for coffee and cake every hour or two.
Have a 'proper' holiday away for a week or two.
Clean out the odd cupboard so you don't feel like you've wasted the whole summer 😉
Make sure you follow some good people on Edutwitter and use their ideas - don't spend ages planning!
Do a bit of batch cooking (or baking) to make the September madness a bit easier.

Have a great summer!

Duckyneedsaclean · 02/05/2019 00:21

I'd waste it. No doubt.

Flower777 · 02/05/2019 00:34

Sleep. Nap. Eat carbs. Repeat.

HundredYearOldMan · 02/05/2019 06:26

Thanks for all the great ideas! I probably will waste at least one day sleeping in, watching tv and being lazy, but the danger is it turning into a habit!

I might make it my mission to finish some of the decorating in the first couple of weeks. Go on holiday in the middle two. Save the appointments/planning/batch cooking until the last week, because in the last week you are already thinking about stating work again. Also the money to do fun things has usually run out by that point 🤣

I would learn a new skill or activity eg martial arts, sailing, rock climbing, ice skating, something a bit unusual and not normally "me".

ForalltheSaints · 02/05/2019 07:08

If there is somewhere you'd love to go to, but need perhaps a fortnight or longer to really visit and see all the local sights (and then time to recover from jet lag), do it! Assuming money is there.

Lllot5 · 02/05/2019 07:10

Think myself lucky.

HundredYearOldMan · 02/05/2019 07:17

I am very lucky, and very much enjoy the break! I always go back in August (Scotland) refreshed and motivated for the next school year!

I'm a teacher. With kids but they are self sufficient teens.

I go away for a week. Dh has 2 weeks off so we do some diy in the other week.
Then I will have always made a list of decorating jobs I want to achieve.

Other than that, I fit in extra exercise classes, read more books, watch more films and enjoy being able to do what I want when I want it.

HeronLanyon · 02/05/2019 07:22

Some kind of activity you’ve always wanted to do ? Some voluntary role for charity.
Only after you’ve slobbed out a bit/recovered and done basic deep prep for the horrors of the next year obvs. That may mean the 6 weeks are over before time for anything else of course.

HundredYearOldMan · 02/05/2019 15:58

I’m not sure where I’d like to go, Canada and Italy are up there!

OP posts:
thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 02/05/2019 18:07

Wow! I can't even imagine having six weeks off. Lucky thing!

I'd just take a tent and live out of it. Scotland, the alps, somewhere like that.

juicy0 · 02/05/2019 18:13

Go on a different type of holiday like sailing in the Ionian Islands. We went for the first time 3 years ago and love it! We've learnt new skills, visited beautiful towns and beaches and met some lovely people.

altiara · 02/05/2019 18:57

I’d go travelling to Cambodia/Thailand/Vietnam - don’t know if it’s a good time of year for it- too jealous to look! And I’d get DH to fly out to one of the destinations and have a luxury section of holiday.

Leeds2 · 02/05/2019 19:07

Look to do a voluntary job with National Trust (or other provider). Can do things like pond/river clearance on a day by day basis, or things like dry stone walling as an overnight experience (you have to pay for the overnight accommodation). Or offer to volunteer somewhere local - I bet a food bank would take someone just for the summer holiday.

Join a gym, or a tennis club, and make sure you get value for money! Or plan to go swimming four or five times a week.

Do a cookery course. I would love to do a "basics" one, but have seen advanced courses offered.
