Milk delivered in glass bottles. Anyone do this?

Quite fancy doing this. Very much like the idea of buying milk from small local business rather than ASDA. Also for the novelty factor if I’m honest.

Questions: does it taste any different? Better/worse? What happens in warm weather if you are out all day?

Answers/opinions/experiences welcome!

Novelty?
We have had milk in bottles since we moved here 19 years ago Confused
Milk minder keeps it cool

fancynancyclancy · 01/05/2019 07:07

I use milk & more too & love it.

i’d much rather buy little & often & we were always running out of milk. Much prefer the glass bottles too.

ExpletiveDelighted · 01/05/2019 07:17

Ours comes just after midnight so DH often picks it up before he goes to bed. Otherwise we have to put a cooler out in summer. The milkman puts it just behind our car rather than on the step so it will be in the shade in the morning, which is considerate Smile. Downsides are it has been stolen more than once (including holder) and having to keep a cooler handy and remember to put it out in summer.

Just delivered now. Awesome.

Milk delivered in glass bottles. Anyone do this?
Thecatisboss · 01/05/2019 07:27

Our milkman is really local (lives in a farm about a mile away) lovely fresh milk delivered at about 3am. Always delivers even in snow as they use the tractor then !

Milk isn't homogenised so we get cream at the top which is lovely especially on coffee and porridge.

Had milk delivered for 20 years as we always run out otherwise.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/05/2019 07:29

We've had Milk and More for years. V convenient, all done online, can order extra items or cancel until 9 pm the previous evening. Large range of non dairy items too, v handy.
Yes, it's more expensive, but well worth it IMO for convenience - less to lug home from shops, not to mention a lot less plastic in the recycling bin.
It always arrives in the wee small hours so have never had a problem with going off even in summer.

Sexnotgender · 01/05/2019 07:31

I get mine delivered. Comes twice a week.

Love it, definitely tastes better and no plastic waste.

RezCowgirl · 01/05/2019 07:49

Anyone who's front door leads right onto the street have issues with the milk getting stolen?

Peaseblossom22 · 01/05/2019 07:52

We have ours delivered and so does my mother . It’s a little more expensive but I like it and it needs people it’s bi orders like us to continue.

Pashazade · 01/05/2019 07:56

Ours is very hit and miss. Usually 1am deliveries but some days it's been 10am. Full fat goes off faster, once opened than in a plastic bottle (buy it for ds cereal, but doesn't get used every day). Occasionally skimmed has gone off before it's date and when the bottle is unopened. Bloody annoying. So yeah convenient but annoying at times. Never had it nicked and we live on a commuter route but it's usually a bit hidden behind a pot plant!

jackparlabane · 01/05/2019 07:59

Used milk and more for years - usually they deliver by 6am, but you get blips when your milkie is on holiday. They introduced a new website last year which had horrendous teething problems but now it works and I only have to phone them once or twice a year.

Only had milk stolen once in a decade, too, despite being visible to many passers-by on an inner city street. And M&M refunded the pint twice (though later stiffed me by only refunding one day out of 3 when they continued delivering when we were on holiday - neighbour made a lot of custard!)

It's a luxury but milk at the door is one I'm willing to pay for so happy to make it reusable glass too.

OrchidInTheSun · 01/05/2019 07:59

I bought a milk minder recently from Milk & More so that my milk doesn't go off even if I have a lie in.

It's really cut down on our plastic waste and I live being able to order other stuff for breakfast (plus veg boxes) too

Laniakea · 01/05/2019 08:05

We do - three times a week, a mixture of skimmed, full fat & gold top (non homogenised so cream at the top) & fruit juice on Saturdays.

The only problem we’ve had is that the magpies figured out how to get the top off the full cream within a couple of days - we leave a piece of wood out to cover the milk crate now. Oh & a drunk stole the gold top one night - he left us £2.50 & an apology note a couple of nights later 🤣

It has massively reduced our plastic waste & means we’re not constantly buying milk to replace what the kids guzzle - when it’s gone they have to wait for the milkman. It is more expensive - I always have some UHT for cooking macaroni cheese or pancakes etc.

Haven’t had issues with it going off & milkman has an electric van which is v. quiet so doesn’t disturb the street.

Hotterthanahotthing · 01/05/2019 08:06

I tried but delivery was very hit and miss, resisted for 4 months but I'm back to plastic though it is local milk.

Lauraloop1516 · 01/05/2019 08:09

We get ours delivered and have never had a problem. It's also fresher - ours is guaranteed to have been produced sometime in the last 6-18 hours.

Branleuse · 01/05/2019 08:10

Ive gone back to doing this, and I wouldnt say the milk tastes any better, but i like supporting local businesses and its an easy way to cut down on plastic

If youre out all day in the summer it wont be good for the milk of course, but if im not going to be home, i cancel the milk that day

Pascha · 01/05/2019 08:10

I'd love to but it's triple the price which I can't sustain, even if I opt for plastic bottles, so it's a no from me.

gothicsprout · 01/05/2019 08:10

We tried it last year but switched back. Various reasons it didn’t work for us - the bottles take up a lot of room in the fridge, we/my daughter don’t like non-homogenised full fat milk, and the local company we were using could never tell us clearly what the price was so there were various errors with bills etc which just got frustrating to sort out. I love the idea but the reality didn’t work for us Sad

barberstreisand · 01/05/2019 08:15

We use milk & more and I get milk delivered 3 times a week, I also get some of their juice and their bread as well. Its nice to have the staples right on your door, without having to worry that you’ll run out

RandomlyChosenName · 01/05/2019 08:17

I’d love to know if milk and more and others are better for farmers than supermarkets buying their milk. Anyone know?

INeedAWittyNameChange · 01/05/2019 08:17

I get mine delivered twice a week along with a pint of fresh orange juice for the weekend. No idea what time the delivery comes - have never heard it - but it's always there when i get up between 6 - 7am. They have a great website where you can add in holiday dates and change your order either as a one off or permanently. It is more expensive but I'm ok with that.

Whitelisbon · 01/05/2019 08:26

We use a local milkman, who delivers mill from his cows. All organic, non homogenized so there's cream on the top.
3 pints, twice a week.
Dc love it, we ran out a few weeks ago and I had to buy some from the shop, and they all turned their nose up at it, despite drinking gallons of it before we had the deliveries.
Ours comes about 4am, so it's never sat long when I get up at 6.
Never had an issue, reliable deliveries, paid direct debit once a fortnight, easy.

TigerCubScout · 01/05/2019 08:29

Ours is delivered twice a week. Arrives in the early hours. Easy to change the order online and is paid by direct debit.
Only once has the skimmed milk been frozen solid in winter.

ExpletiveDelighted · 01/05/2019 08:39

The other thing I dislike is that, unless its changed recently, you can't contact milk and more by email, so on the odd occasion ours hasn't appeared you have to phone (office hours or Sat morning and queue for ages) or write a letter.

My DCs won't touch non-homogenised blue top eitherl (don't blame them, eewww) so we buy blue in plastic for them, green in glass for us, still less plastic than before.

fancynancyclancy · 01/05/2019 08:41

I would prefer to use a local independent milkman as opposed to milk & more but there wasn’t any in my area.
