Anyone given baby MMR vaccine before 12months?

Just that really. DD is 7 months. We live in an area where MMR rates are incredibly low (60-70%) and where measles cases have tripled in a year (and not far from the baby who got a lot of media coverage this week). She has two older brothers so already exposed to their nursery/school germs, and DS3 not yet old enough to have had the second dose of MMR. She's due to start nursery at 9 months. One way or another, am really worried she'll end up exposed to measles before the vaccine is given at 12m.

There is apparently no risk with giving MMR after 6 months, and it seems to be offered to 6m+ where there are big outbreaks (I'm no expert though, basing this on news reports/US health advice as they've had more big outbreaks) but the baby has to have a dose around 12 months as well as the early one, which I guess is why the usual schedule puts it at one dose at 12 months.

All in all I'm minded to get her the MMR before she starts nursery, if that's possible - has anyone else done this, either via GP or privately? Or has anyone considered it and been swayed against?

If you get it early then you still need to get the usual 2 doses as well (1year and 3y 4m)

It will probably have to be private if it's off schedule, though if your area has low uptake/high risk the rules might be different.
PP is correct you will need the regular doses too.
If you were going on holiday to a high risk area you would get MMR from 6m+ so it's not particularly out of the ordinary to have it before 1 year.

I haven't because I haven't had the need to consider it. But if you're in an at risk area, you should easily be able to talk to your surgery's senior nurse about your concerns and make an informed decision quickly. Your best bet is to ring the senior nurse at your practice to discuss over the phone (book a telephone consultation) or book to see them in person (under DD's name, naturally). The senior nurse is the one I'd speak with rather than the GP since the senior nurse is the main clinician who deals with vaccinations: ordering, administering, and keeping up to date with protocols, and all that.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate it

HipHop Oh, that’s really good to know - thanks! I hadn’t thought of that but yes, suppose people must take babies to high risk areas fairly often. Assume then there’s no suggestion that it’s a bad idea to have two doses within 6 months? I’ll be interested to see what the local approach is. I’m completely happy to pay, but I do wonder if there’s any push to get it offered to stop potential spread.

TheVanguardSix Thank you, that’s really helpful. The main nurse at our practice is lovely so I’m sure she won’t mind me asking. I’ll do that tomorrow.
