Anyone know somewhere pleasant to eat near Burnham On Sea?

MIL lives in Burnham. We go up regularly, on a weekend (often a Sunday) and usually eat lunch out. I'm sure it's lovely if you live there and I don't mean to offend, but there just doesn't seem to be anywhere that does nice food. I don't mean luxury or expensive. Just the normal type of interesting cafe / pub food you get in other parts of the country.

The target / prevalent customer seems to be the cheap holiday crowd, so every place we've been in has a menu full of pile it high and sell it cheap.

I just want to eat something vaguely interesting, in a pleasant and clean space, maybe with a glass of wine.

We are driving, so doesn't have to actually be in BOS but not too far away as its 2hrs each way for us to visit and DD's only 2yo.

I've tried googling but can't find anything. We've been going to the cafe / ice cream place opposite b&m most recently, but a salad of slimy muddy lettuce last time has put me right off going back.

Have you tried Brent House? It's a local carvery place that lots of people rate.
Or the Hobbs Boat, on the road towards Weston, this one is further, about 20 mins!

WeeDangerousSpike · 30/04/2019 18:35

Thank you, I'll look them up.

I work near Burnham & we have this same issue whenever it's Christmas or leaving do etc.
Really nice places are:
The George Inn at Wedmore
The Swan in Wedmore
The Duck in Burtle
Rich's Cider Press (more basic but good carvery)

Otherwise we tend to go down to Taunton which has more choice & is only 30mins away.

It's mad isn't it?! Nowhere else have I seen cafe after cafe of formica tables and all day breakfasts that all seem to be sustainable businesses. I'm in Cornwall, so used to holiday driven hospitality but it's all so samey.

It's a pain in the arse when we're only there from 10-4 or whatever. And MIL will announce somewhere is fantastic, then it turns out she thinks it's marvellous because Fred from the chemist's sister's dog's aunt worked there for 5 mins 8 years ago. And she's never actually been in the place. Sigh.

This is why it needs to be somewhere that serves alcohol. Grin

Thanks for the list - I'll have a google

The Railway Inn in Sandford, part of the Thatchers Cider farm- amazing food and in a lovely spot- great factory shop nearby.
Or open bus to Weston Super Mare to il Michealangelo which is very pleasant and opposite the beach- try to get there for happy hour as can be a bit pricey...

By factory shop, meant the Thatchers Cider factory shop!

WeeDangerousSpike · 30/04/2019 20:29

Cider you say.... Grin

Lots of cider!

cyberfairy · 30/04/2019 20:36

There is even a cider menu- live up north now but spend a fair bit when I pop down to see my family in Weston. You can fill up containers with cider from the factory shop- good cheese there too- all the food groups in one!

The Duck at Burtle, The Ashcott Inn, The Bower Inn, Bridgwater, the Red Cow, Brent Knoll, The George and Swan, Wedmore, Brent house, The Brent Knoll Inn, La Vela (in Burnham), The New Inn at Cross, The Brunello Lounge, Weston, there really is a lot of choice locally, but I do seem to be mostly mentioning country pubs.
Hobb's Boat is part of a chain, ok with a voucher but not great without. Your mum probably has a voucher come through her door every few months.

Theimpossiblegirl · 30/04/2019 20:43

Sorry, MIL.

Bohemond · 30/04/2019 20:50

I second the Swan at Wedmore. We are also intending to visit the White Horse at Mark in the next few weeks. The new Mercure hotel in Bridgwater does a Sunday lunch and I have heard good things about the Green Olive in Bridgwater.
We don’t tell many people that we live near Bridgwater Grin. We live in the Quantocks.

Atalune · 30/04/2019 20:51

The George is Wedmore is pretty average I would say. We are there over Easter and it was all quite heavy and oily.

The Swan is lovely though!

Burnham on Sea is pretty grim, sorry.

Atalune · 30/04/2019 20:52

Bridgwater is ropey in places but also lovely in places too! Grin

We are in Somerset too.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 30/04/2019 21:15

No suggestions from me but I'm noting recommendations with interest.

Theimpossiblegirl · 30/04/2019 21:16

Ooh yes, The Green Olive is nice, but I've heard mixed reviews about The Mercure. Forgot about Mark, both The White Horse and The Pack Horse are nice.
Apart from La Vela, I only tend to eat at The Chandi Indian in Burnham itself.

WeeDangerousSpike · 30/04/2019 21:22

Burnham on Sea is pretty grim, sorry.

You may think so, I couldn't possibly comment...

I am baffled by it's 'seaside' status though. Venture more than 10ft from the sea wall and it's certain death. Fantastic.

WeeDangerousSpike · 30/04/2019 21:27

I've always thought la vela sounded nice, but it's not open at lunchtimes.

Ooooh 100% the Thatchers pub in Sandford, although probably a good idea to book if you want to eat in the restaurant - otherwise you usually just have to chance you luck at getting a table in the bar!

Bentley111 · 30/04/2019 21:54

Another one to recommend The Railway, the Thatchers Cider pub... gorgeous roasts! Make sure you book though, they do get really busy 😬

Theimpossiblegirl · 30/04/2019 22:13

How could I forget The Sheppey, a bit of a drive across the levels at Godney. It's one of my favourite places. It's not far from Glastonbury or Clarks Village. I also like the Queen Victoria at Priddy.
