We're looking to buy a house that needs work done to it, I've been doing a floor plan.
In your opinion, which would you prefer?
Open plan kitchen and diner with doors leading next door to living room, or open plan kitchen diner, which then leads to living room, so all one big open space?
ThankyouGrin

We're a musical family (only one teen left at home now) but a shuttable door to the music room was valuable.

Young family and children - one big open plan.

Older couple then separate rooms.

Kitchen-diner with doors to living room, especially if you don't have a separate utility room, otherwise you'll be listening to the dishwasher or the washing machine chugging away if it is all open-plan.

Personally I'm not a fan of very open spaces. We're a noisy house with kids, cooking, TV watching and visitors often all going on at the same time. It's nice to be able to close a door sometimes. I have a theory that more extroverted people like open plan and more introverted types like individual rooms.

Doors to the living room definitely.

Kitchen diner with separate living room. It’s nice to have a private cosy space. I’m not a big fan of truly open plan, it feels cold and univiting to me.

Kitchen diner with doors to living room definitely. Never open plan, I say that as a parent!

When one DC wants to watch telly, the other needs to do homework and you are frying onions, separate rooms really come into their own! Grin

Even with young children, I think it’s good to have a separate space.
Nice in the evenings to retreat to space not full of toys etc & children soon get older & having two spaces for you/them/friends I found invaluable, so I would go for kitchen/diner maybe with room for a sofa & toys & doors leading to a living room.

Expressedways · 30/04/2019 16:21

In an ideal world I’d say moveable walls or big doors you can open and close so you can have flexible space. Failing that then close it off. Fully open plan is only really practical with toddlers.

AudacityOfHope · 30/04/2019 16:27

Doors to the living room definitely!

Who wants washing machine noise/dishes being done/cooking smells etc, while they're in the living room trying to enjoy peace?

I do NOT get the allure of open plan at all!

Gertie75 · 30/04/2019 16:30

Definitely doors, it's warmer, cosier and more homely.

Open plan feels like a cheap holiday let.
