Hi there, I’m completely new to Mumsnet but very excited to have joined! I’m a first time mum and my boy is now being potty trained. I have taken on the decision to miss out the pull up stage and go straight from nappies to “big big pants” have any of you done this and if so how did you get on? Any tips to encourage? Thank you x

I never use pull ups, I find that they are too confusing - they look and feel like a nappy. When we make a decision to potty train I go cold turkey on daytime nappies and go straight to pants and shorts or joggers that are slightly too big, so very easy to pull up and down, and easy to wash and dry too!
Good luck!!

Thank you! I am also going straight in with pants at night, is this a bad idea do you think? I have read so many different views online!x

I wouldn't advise giving up night time nappies until they've woken up with dry ones several times in a row. Being night time trained is a different process to potty training, it involves hormones and if the child isn't producing them, no amount of training will get them dry at night. The age for night time dryness varies hugely - a few children get it at the same time as daytime, others can be 5, 6, 7 years plus.

We are there at the minute. Gone from full on nappies to night nappies only. DS is 3 and a half though and I waited for him to be interested. It's been 5 days and so far no poo accidents and only 1 or 2 wee accidents each day. It will work out!

Went straight to pants during day at about 30 months. Had one poo accident and that was that! Nighttime pull ups but only needed for a couple weeks.
But remember even when fairly reliable they are times (and always at the most inconvenient times!) when your child will need to go and mean THERE AND THEN! It takes a while for them to recognise the need in good time to go find a loo when out and about. Also if they are having a lot of fun playing etc they start the wiggling but deny the need until...
Also I did have an issue with my daughter withholding her wee. She’s go to bed, sleep 10 hours, get up and dressed and would refuse to go. Many a time I took her to reception and told the teacher she hadn’t been to the toilet yet. The GP said this is not uncommon with girls and she’d outgrow it. Which she did.

We started yesterday had a few accidents but he was use to potty training with a nappy to get use to going to the toilet, today we ventured out the house for a good few hours and he has been dry all day!! Thank you so much 😊 any advice on how to encourage or rewards? We have a sticker chart but he seems to be getting uninterested now x
