Advice re tonsil and adenoid removal 2 year old

Has anyone's dc been through this? If so, were they unwell for long after? Were they sore for long?

Since the op date has been confirmed as DS has poor oxygen levels during sleep I can't sleep or think about anything else.

I feel so stupid because it's supposedly quite routine on older children. He's only just 2 and he did have surgery at 3 weeks old which was very serious and I keep waking up reliving those moments when he was a baby.

Any comments would be appreciated

DD had hers done a week after she turned 2. She was a bit sore for a week, but I've cream and tlc resolved that!

Dd had hers taken out a fortnight ago. She was a bit sore for a good week afterwards but absolutely fine after 10 days. Plenty of calpol and kids ibuprofen. She’s a bit older though (9).

Ds had his done in November for sleep apnea. He was 4.

He has autism and has a higher pain threshold so doesn't act 'poorly' when he is, but I wasn't sure what to expect as it was his first operation.

He was mardy waking up and refused to eat (but the not eating was nothing unusual back then) but the day after surgery you would never know he'd had anything done.

They tried to send us home 4 hours later but he wouldn't eat so they kept us in overnight, I gave him pain relief for a further 10 days but thankfully everything went fine and he healed up with no issues.

His eating is so much better now he's got taller gained weight and his sleep apnea has gone too (he still doesn't sleep though but he has autism to complicate that matter!)

Dd2 had her tonsils out aged 3.5 due to recurrent infection. She bounced back very quickly and was up playing after her op. We stayed one night.

Compared to the constant tonsilitis she was in great spirits and recovered well. She then had her adenoids out aged 8 again bounced back super quick and we were home that day.

Dd had hers done at 7 for apnoea.

She had hers done late afternoon and an overnight stay. Was on private insurance which was why not during day with same day discharge. Ds was in hospital for asthma attack and there were several children recovering from tonsillectomies and they all seemed well once initial coming round from the anaesthetic passed.

I set an alarm and slept in with her for about the first week, giving calpol/ibuprofen every 4/6 hours so never really had any significant pain. Made an immense difference to her overall health and immune system. Didn’t catch every bug going, slept well, put on weight etc.

I bought a humidifier so had that running for the first few nights to moisten the air.

She had no side effects or bleeding. Bit surprised when a big scab sloughed off. She was advised to eat scratchy food to help with the healing and had no problems with sandwiches, toast etc. Avoided citrus and dairy as much as possible. I did the same when I had mine done a few years ago, and also no problems with recovery.

DS had his out when he was 4. Best thing for his health. He's been so much better since. He was a little groggy coming round but was eating right away and playing on the ward. I set an alarm and gave him painkillers to a clock which seemed to help avoid him being in pain. Only one occasion when he was in pain but he recovered so well!

My daughter (6) had hers out today. My older daughter had hers out a few years ago too. They have behaved differently as my youngest seems to find the pain worse but we have been sent home with the usual painkillers and tramadol so hopefully she's going to be comfortable overnight. Made such a huge difference to my older daughter heath wise.

DD had hers out at 2. It was honestly a life changing operation for us all. Transformed her sleep, eating and breathing.

The op itself was worrying but the staff in hospital were great with her and us before she went into theatre and I got to be with her until the last possible moment. We were in overnight because of her age and size and it was a rough night to be totally honest but once we were home it was much easier.

The hardest part was keeping a toddler relatively calm and still at home for the recovery period.
