DS has got an interview this Wednesday. Never thought of joining the army before but there is a specific role he’s very much interested in. Should the question arise (why do you want to join the army?). Should the answer be ‘for the specific role I’ve applied for’ (sorry, don’t want to be specific, could be outing for him) or should he be enthusiastic about what the army can offer (opportunities/lifestyle/travel)?

Can't help with the question but can tell you that joining the army was the making of my son. He travelled far and wide and left with a load of qualifications that have given him secure jobs ever since.

Ages ago I knew someone who worked on army recruitment and they said a lot of people went into it for job security/pension etc so they must be used to people who haven't had a life long dream of joining up

Thank you for your comments so far.

Anyone else?

I'd go for both. "I want to do X and he opportunity to do it in an organisation that also promotes adventure, self development, education and challenges is too good to miss" etc.

Be specific. If he wants to be a sniper, say so. IME the army is the least defined regimental role of all services. Unless it has changed, one gets assigned to the regiment and role depending on aptitude and numbers. If they need mechanics urgently that is where he may end up.

For specific skills for when he leaves, perhaps he should be lining himself up for electronic skills in either the Navy or RAF and try to go in at a commissioned level rather than in the ranks. Most ex-forces officers I know are earning £150k plus for IT and telecoms companies.

Good luck to him.

Bit of both. Dd is Navy, she applied to a specific pathway so concentrated on that but had to stress wanting to be in the navy and being an officer too.

Yes combine the two. It's fine to say there are 2 reasons I'd love this job, x and y.

But not just what the army can offer in the way of benefits, that he'd be proud to defend his country etc
