HR meeting re sickness

Nhs worker here. I had from 24th feb to 15th April off work due to molar pregnancy and generally feel horrendous due to that then I went back to work and got injured so I'm off as my arm is infected and I cannot go to work whilst it's still open.

My boss has just invited me to a meeting with hr on Wednesday to see if they can support me? Is this a stage 1 disciplinary? What can I expect?

Unless you've been on monitoring before I cant see this being a stage 1. Perhaps it's because it's a work related injury?

SpoonBlender · 29/04/2019 13:52

Work related injury discussion - they'll be covering their backs by covering your injury, I suspect.

DeadBod · 29/04/2019 13:56

Did you injury your arm whilst you were at work? Surely it's more to cover themselves rather than discipline you.

As it was a work related I would expect hr, occy health and your line manager to support you. You cant work with an infected arm, they may ask how long you think you'll be off for. Hopefully you're not losing any money with unsocial hours, I would ask them if all the necessary paperwork is done, ask for copies just in case you want to take any action. Was it negligence or did the student faint whilst doing a procedure.

NewYoiker · 29/04/2019 14:09

@wigglypiggly student fainted whilst doing a procedure and caught my arm with a thankfully clean scalpel but my hands were clearly not that clean and I clapped my hand to it immediately and it's infected

I wouldn’t expect it to be a disciplinary, I had a disciplinary meeting and it stated at the top of letter that’s clearly what it was. I’m NHS Scotland so not sure if it’s different though (also the meeting should never have happened and they were quite apologetic when I explained my sickness/absence but that’s by the by!)

wigglypiggly · 29/04/2019 15:14

Oh dear, were you assisting, are they saying your hands werent clean or should have worn gloves. They're not blaming you for the accident are they. It doesn't sound like a disciplinary. I was called to a stage 1 after being off for 3 months with bad shoulder,I was off for a total of nearly a year and never had any other sickness meetings apart from occupational health and back to work meetings.

NewYoiker · 29/04/2019 15:29

No I mean I'd been opening swabs packets and using gloves to take samples etc, I had gloves on at the time having just closed a bin bag stood up med student fainted I got hurt. Ripped my gloves off and immediately applied pressure to stop the bleeding. But I didn't have change to wash my hands after taking the gloves off so there could be a small amount of transfer on my hands. I think it's probably because I forced them to do a report on it.

I bet this meeting is a cover their own arse meeting. You could get seriously ill for this and they know it of course. Take someone with you from the Union.

Moreisnnogedag · 29/04/2019 15:43

It’s not a disciplinary just a sickness meeting - you’ll have triggered on policy and it isn’t a judgement at all

FaithInfinity · 29/04/2019 16:43

It’s routine at my place (also NHS). Arranged for anyone who has had 3 absences in a year or is off for a certain amount of time. I had one recently - it was basically to ensure they were doing everything to support me while I’m off and how they can facilitate me returning to work when I’m better. I took my union rep for support but mine was fine.

SeptemberIssue · 29/04/2019 18:01

It’s not to cover their own arses or to discipline you — the meeting will be a “keep in touch” meeting to understand what they can do to support you with ongoing sickness/how to support a return to work.

There will be part of the policy you have “triggered” which has resulted in the meeting. Nothing to worry about Smile
