NHS to stop offering weatabix for breakfast in hospital

I just wondered what others experienced in hospital recently. I was in hospital for 3 days and was never offered breakfast just had lunch and supper that we ticked boxes on menu for. I never knew that they did breakfast, no wonder I was starving.

OP posts:

I have always been offered ceral or toast (cold toast)

Littlechocola · 28/04/2019 19:38

Hmm did you not ask?

We offer 4 meals a day. Breakfast is toast or cereal.

Littlechocola · 28/04/2019 19:38

Not that you should have to ask but did you not mention that you were hungry?

My experience was a trolley full of tepid tea and cold toast dumped at the end of the ward, with those of us able to get out of bed and walk taking some food and drink to those who couldn’t get up.

Absolutely grim.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/04/2019 19:49

Where does the weetabix come in, or not seeing as you aren't having any breakfast. Thought this thread was about the NHS finally realising that cereal isn't really food.

Honeyroar · 28/04/2019 19:49

Porridge, weetabix, cornflakes. Fruit. Tea coffee or juice.

Fizzyhedgehog · 28/04/2019 19:57

I was in hospital with DS last time. I was given rolls, butter, boiled egg, sliced meat, cheese, jam and honey and a yoghurt. DS got the same. (Not NHS, though.)
Last time I was in hospital through the NHS was when I had DS. You could go to the dining room and get toast, cheese, butter, sandwiches, yoghurt. It wasn't an issue, really.
The time before that I was on a private ward and you got to choose your meals.
Did you not ask and just expect them to leave you hungry?

TitianaTitsling · 28/04/2019 20:02

Did no one on your ward get breakfast?

KitKat1985 · 28/04/2019 20:07

After I had DD1 and was on the post-natal ward, I didn't realise breakfast was a 'self-service' affair and we were supposed to get ourselves toast / cereal from the breakfast cupboard. Unfortunately no-one told me it was there so I spent the first morning very hungry. Possibly the same where you were?

thenightsky · 28/04/2019 20:08

Was it perhaps set up in a different room for you to go get, rather than brought to your bed area?

DS was an inpatient last year and there was a room with a toaster, microwave etc available all day.

JenniferJareau · 28/04/2019 20:09

Why did you not ask?

wtf
of course cereal is food. wheat biscuits are high in fibre and contain a good amount of protein as well.

op when I was last in hospital breakfast was served in the common room. but nurses only told us after bed neighbour collapsed with low sugar. Hmm
immobile patients were supposed to get a tray to their bed but that knly happend if relatives were near.

Drochaid · 28/04/2019 20:11

I spent a lot of time in hospital a few years ago and had a morning roll with butter every morning without fail. Think this might just be q Scottish (Glasgow?) Thing though.

FintyTin · 28/04/2019 20:11

I am fortunate enough to have only been an inpatient peri-and post-natally, but DH has had a few admissions. In our local NHS hospital we were always well-fed and looked after. Sorry that you haven’t had such good treatment, OP.

I assume they’re taking Weetabix off the menu as they’re high GI in favour of lower-GI options? I expect they serve up non-branded wheat ‘bisks’ rather than the expensive ones, so it’s not likely to be a cost measure.

Drochaid · 28/04/2019 20:11

(Because the toast was always cold. The ward I was on had a toaster so if you were really lucky the nurses made you toast)

NameChangeSameRage · 28/04/2019 20:12

Ours comes around on a trolley- was in last week. Offered cereal, toast, tea, coffee, orange juice. No complaints from me!

CheesecakeAddict · 28/04/2019 20:12

When I needed my gallbladder removed, the only breakfast they could get me was a full fry up 🤨.
When my daughter was in hospital it was cornflakes or toast.
I am not too worried tbh. Hospitals are not known for their excellent cuisine. I got fed when dd was in for 5 days as she is breastfed but most of the time I got dh to bring in supplies!

Drochaid · 28/04/2019 20:12

Finty no, its because the cost has gone up. They're no longer ordering from whoever makes weetabix and bran flakes.

englishdictionary · 28/04/2019 20:12

You didn't know they did breakfast but your complaint is that they are stopping weetabix?

Raspberry88 · 28/04/2019 20:13

I assume they’re taking Weetabix off the menu as they’re high GI in favour of lower-GI options?

The news story I read said that it was for financial reasons...!

ChicCroissant · 28/04/2019 20:14

Maternity ward by any chance? One of the staff did bring me some breakfast when I couldn't get to the room/table with it on, it was a help-yourself thing though and not like the lunch/dinner delivered to your bed.

Hairynick · 28/04/2019 20:14

Drochaid I loved my roll and butter! Also Glasgow.

Rarfy · 28/04/2019 20:14

I was in for a month in December. On one ward we were offered toast / cereal / fruit / fruit juice / hot drinks and could have all if wanted. Dinner and tea were usually a sandwich or salad with a desert then something like Sunday roast and hot pudding or lasagne potatoes and veg with hot pudding.

On a different ward in the same hospital a trolley came round and two slices of toast were dumped wherever there was a space to put them.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/04/2019 20:15

It is a cost measure apparently they are not using there buying powers appropriately and paying a fortune for branded cereal where they could buy in bulk at discounted rates which not everyone is doing and weetabix and all bran (I think) are too expensive and ate coming off the menus
