Automatic cars - talk to me about good and bad cars and which ones do and don't have a creep function?

I am looking for an automatic car and learnt in a car which has a "creep" function. However my understanding is that not every automatic car does this.

Please can you let me know which automatic cars do this as I am looking to buy a car soon.

Also which automatic cars do you rate / not rate and why? This will be my first car so any advice will be welcome Smile

I want the creep function, mainly for manoeuvres and not in slow moving traffic. It is what I am used to and what I feel most confident in driving.

@Hollybollybooboo that would be true if I was looking for a brand new car but I am buying a second hand car so it's not quite as simple as find a car and buy the auto version as it very much depends on availability.

So far I have seen a Fiesta, a Ford Fusion and a Honda Jazz. I would love a golf or vw though because this is what I learnt in and they are fab to drive

I woild

I've just come back from town and was thinking about this thread while driving, by creep do you mean the car moving while in drive but your foot is off the pedals?

Witchofzog · 29/04/2019 11:07

@Damediazepam - basically yes. So when you are doing a manoeuvre if you take your foot off the pedal in either drive or reverse the car will creep forward or back without you needing to use the accelerator

Without the creep you would need to switch from the brake to the accelerator more

I thought all autos did this, that's how they work isn't it?

Creep is what used to happen with old style autos that used to creep forward even with your foot in the brake ,hence my confusion .

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/04/2019 11:37

**otherwise when you took your foot of the accelerator the car would come to a standstill without the need for a brake.

I now have an automatic Mercedes after driving a manual for years. It is a beautiful car, so easy to drive.

Book in for some refresher lessons with an instructor who has a car that doesn't creep. You really need to be confident enough to go from brake to accelerator in slow moving traffic.

Stormei · 29/04/2019 12:23

I honestly thought all autos were the same
D- moves slowly, press accelerator to move faster. In gear.
P-stays still whatever you do. Pawl is lowered and you could rev away like a manual out of gear
N-can roll, just for when on tow and generally ignored
I’ve driven lots and never had different...

HollyBollyBooBoo · 29/04/2019 13:01

@Witchofzog if you go on Autotrader for example you can use the filters to choose the car, distance from your home and gearbox (tick the automatic) then you can choose whatever car you want.

Far fewer autos available but a helpful search function.

I have an automatic Fiat 500 and I've had no issues so far - it's lovely to drive. I learned in an auto Corsa so not a big car but the 500 feels like a tiny bubble, it's great for parking!

aintnothinbutagstring · 29/04/2019 13:45

By multi mode, you mean semi automatic, because so many autos are also semi. You can drive a semi on an auto license as long as only two pedals. My DH has a semi auto Toyota Avensis that has done 120,000 miles and has been amazingly reliable, it's seen him through commuting 80miles a day.

@Hollybollybooboo I have looked on there but my area seems to be a bit of a desert for some reason. But there are quite a few on Facebook Marketplace for some reason

That's a good idea @Englishdictionary
