MBA - is it worth ££

Am having a ponder over where my career is going with a coffee and Google!

Have a degree and other industry qualifications.

Is an MBA worth the (very) high cost? All seem to say enhance your career prospects and future earnings. I wouldn't get financial assistance from work so would need to use savings.

Has anyone done one/is doing one with small DC? Is it doable? How much importance is placed on which business school you go to. Ie do you get what you pay for? Any school recommendations?

What do you do at the moment and what sort of thing hing might you want to move into? That’s relevant for whether it’s worth it!

I used to work for a business school. Depending on where you want to go apply late and get a reduction in fees. Also get your employer to fund it if you can. I think the mba is good to do as it takes you out of your comfort zone

What’s your professional background? Finance, HR etc?

I think they open up more strategy and consultancy type roles. I’ve also seen someone move from law into a more finance oriented role in M&A work.

In terms of MBA vs Executive MBA it will obviously partly come down to what you think you can fit in. I would guess that Executive MBA programmes are more likely to have experienced managers on them and obviously they will be currently working, which could be useful in terms of contacts and networking.

I would ask about funding even if you don’t think you’ll get it and I would also ask about study leave which might be likely if you’re sure they won’t pay any fees. I guess the other thing to explore is whether there is the opportunity for any lateral moveable in your current organisation whilst you’re doing the MBA which would give you a chance to apply it.

Doing any kind of study alongside work is tough so I do think you need to be genuinely interested in it too. Can’t comment on doing it alongside work and children!

Are you free to take advantage of better job offers involving moving house, going abroad, being away from home throughout the week?

I looked at this, and concluded that it was worth it if you really wanted a career change, and if you had a pretty good idea about what you wanted to do next.

It's not worth the ££ or stress if you just want to move up your current trajectory faster. And not is it a good idea if you want a change but don't know what too, because you could be in the same position in a year's time, but down £40k.

I didn't, and don't regret it.
