Where do 12/13 year old boys get their clothes from?

Taswama · 27/04/2019 19:22

I’m still buying for DS and it’s mostly next, H&M and some M&S.
At the own clothes day last term he wore an H&M top and had some nasty comments. DP said I should get him some more trendy clothes.
Is fat face ok or does it need to be gap or sports brands (addidas / Nike)?
He gets bullied anyway unfortunately and my own experience as a child was it was better to be in plain no brand clothing than the ‘wrong’ brand.

River Island have some nice clothes for boys too. Good value for T-shirts which are plain but quite trendy ones according to my son. Such a shame they worry about this isn’t it. I remember what it was like though.

Thistles24 · 27/04/2019 21:01

I hate to say it, but I think this is one of the situation where unless the school step up, they’ll just find another thing to pick on. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with unbranded clothes. It’s so hard though. My DS is painfully shy, but pretty academic, one of the top 3 in the school at sports, always wears fashionable clothes and has his hair styled nicely, basically I thought there was nothing to pick on him for. I was wrong- he gets bullied because he’s not good at art! Bullies can always find a persons weakness.

pikapikachu · 27/04/2019 21:09

Ds1 was 18 and very into clothes and still wears lots of H&M

Dark skinny jeans and pullover hoodie (JD Sports not Sports Direct) would be the safe bet. Nike or Adidas shoes. Black is safe. My 13yo wears Nike Huarache but would happily wear Adidas NMD, Air Nike, Roche etc

Gap, Fat Face and M&S definitely not ok. (M&S for school is fine) River Island, ASOS, Boohooman is what you're after

My DS 11 got some hype tops at Christmas. I expected them to be terrible quality. But they're actually lovely. Especially the sweatshirt.

Shelbybear · 27/04/2019 21:18

My nephews, mainly JD Sports. Some designers shops for the Armani and stone island stuff they like at ridiculous prices 😯

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 27/04/2019 21:23

It's really shit. I had some bullying over having the wrong trainers when I was a teenager.

Mine are 14 and mainly wear primark jeans and t-shirts to do with their fandoms - Supernatural, avengers, Star Trek, doctor who etc.

As far as I know they've never been bullied about but then they are very laid back and couldn't give a shit what others think. Wish I could have their confidence!

Lookingforadvice123 · 27/04/2019 21:25

My sons are 3 and 2 months so I can't help but this thread made me well up a bit too. My eldest certainly doesn't follow the crowd already so I can imagine him wanting to go in on non uniform day in a tweed jacket just to be different.

DH said he made the mistake of going in some naff brand of trainers when he was a kid and he got some nasty comments (even though he wasn't a typical bully target). His advice is "ask your son what the cool kids wear, and be ready to spend a bit of money". If you end up buying more expensive stuff, maybe save it for the non uniform days!

Cafetierecoffee · 27/04/2019 21:27

Fat face

ChoudeBruxelles · 27/04/2019 21:29

Primark mostly but he has a few superdry and other brand hoodies. Sports direct for trainers. I give him a budget and he can then choose what he likes in there.

He’s into the military and has some forwear T-shirts (but that’s a bit niche unless it’s something you’re into)

puppylovebaby · 27/04/2019 21:41

I have an 11 yr old son who also get bullied however I ensure he feels confident in his clothes.

Yesterday we went to a large Sports Direct with a surprisingly good selection of clothes and I bought 4 t shirts, Adidas and reebok (his choice).

This is his current wardrobe-

He has a number of pairs Adidas as trainers

Jeans are just from M&S as they fit well.

Shirts from H&M - chambray blue, white, blue and white sporty one

Boxers- M&S autograph

Hoodies- red converse, green Jack Wills and navy Adidas

Jack Wills - t shirt

Tommy Hilfiger - smart white shirt

He has an older sister who is v into her clothes so he is becoming aware of labels and shops for the first time.

anothermansmother · 27/04/2019 21:46

My ds wears anything that comes from either jd sport or kids cavern. He likes tracksuit bottoms and T-shirt and lives in them but also has a couple of pairs jeans/chinos and a couple of shirts. However the biggest obsession with him is footwear, mainly trainers.
Like others have said no matter how he's dressed the bullying needs sorting, as if it's not his clothing it will be something else.

QueenBlueberries · 27/04/2019 21:54

Forgot to say ds hates sports t shirts of fashion clothes with huge massive logos. The logo has to be small. So he would want to buy this for example www.sportsdirect.com/nike-club-hbr-hoody-junior-boys-531146?colcode=53114601 but he would like this www.jdsports.co.uk/product/black-the-north-face-simple-dome-t-shirt-junior/1286591/

PoptartPoptart · 27/04/2019 22:06

Superdry is massively popular with DS (13) and all his friends.
It’s good quality stuff and washes well (wow, I’m so boring and old!)
It is a little pricey but they have at least two decent sales every year when I tend to stock up on T-shirt’s and hoodie jumpers

spiderlight · 27/04/2019 22:31

I remember the dread of non-uniform days all too well from my own bitter experience - the cold dread of realising you were wearing something 'wrong'. My 12-year-old isn't really interested in clothes yet and tends to wear t-shirts with graphics from his fairly niche interests (a particular anime and an unusual sport he competes in) from place like Redbubble, rather than trying to fit in. His friends are mostly quite geeky like him though. Other than that, he tends to wear plain tops and jeans or joggers from Next/H&M.

millimat · 27/04/2019 22:31

DS is 12 and doesn't care what he looks like, but I'm v conscious that I don't want him picked on. he's very geeky too. He practicall lives in adidas training pants like the ones in the pic despite not being sporty - they're comfy! He also likes the north face tops. Refuses point blank to wear anything like jeans.

Where do 12/13 year old boys get their clothes from?
sproutsandparsnips · 27/04/2019 23:03

Millimat and Taswana nice to see some others with geeky sons! DS has rugby players' thighs so would struggle with skinny jeans! So t shirts and joggers from primark but jeans from M&S and George. Has only recently started to express interest in what he's wearing. I've had to buy a brightly coloured shirt 'Hawaiian style' for him to wear to posh events.....

massistar · 28/04/2019 08:42

For my DS, 13.. Zara skinny jeans and either Adidas, Nike or surf brands like ONeill and Billabong. Or skater brands like Vans. But it's very much dependent on where you live I think.. not much in the way of Rascal or North Face here but if you go in to the nearest city that's all you see.

archivebuildingsite · 28/04/2019 08:52

Taswama plain stuff can work though. My nearly 12 year old goes to a non uniform school and wears a plain black t shirt and black jeans most days (he has 5 identical short sleeved t shirts and 3 identical long sleeved - he asked me to buy these and they're just fruit of the loom). However he also wears Fortnite t-shirts (received as a present from his best friend) theme park t shirts bought at the theme parks, and other random t shirts with meaningless denim related slogans, pretty much no brands.

I don't think a certain brand will stop bullying if it's happening year round, and appearing to try too hard can ironically be just as bad. If he's got the confidence it would be best if he could "own" his own choices - geeky can be cool, and kids respect peers with inner confidence in who they are - but if he doesn't or doesn't know what he wants to wear I'd go plain.

Taswama · 28/04/2019 12:40

Thanks archive . Yes I am beginning to think sticking with dark plain clothes is probably best. I had a look at JD sports last night and I think he’d hate the ones with huge logos.

DogsandBoysmeanMud · 28/04/2019 12:50

GAP is known as Gay and Proud where we are so mine won't wear.

They usually wear what their friend wear. One wears Nike and Adidas and the other more top man and vintage from DeePop.

A&F and Hollister are all for younger teens. Also Jack Wills is a bit too preppy.

MumUnderTheMoon · 28/04/2019 12:57

Your right op bullies will always find something to pick on. I think you would be better to spend your time teaching your ds that these dickheads aren't important and their opinions don't matter than worrying about acquiring new branded clothes. You don't want to teach him to alter himself to fit in.

Felipa · 28/04/2019 13:00

This is quite depressing...I hate the whole 'sportswear' look, and my 9 year old is completely uninterested in clothes, just wears minecraft or star wars t shirts. The thought of him having to conform or be bullied in a couple of years is sad Sad

TSSDNCOP · 28/04/2019 13:05

Tops/Jackets: A&F, Jack Wills, Animal, Vans, Superdry, Ted Baker, M&S, Nike, Adidas, Hollister, Lacoste
Jeans/Shorts: Next/Gap
Shoes: Nike, Vans, R&B

cricketmum84 · 28/04/2019 13:07

DS is 14 and mainly wears branded sports type t shirts from sports direct. He has some smarter tops from river island and gap. And as a treat maybe superdry.

He is too old now for any of the kids ranges at H&M, George etc, they all seem to be slogan type tops and quite young styles.

jackparlabane · 28/04/2019 13:51

Reading with interest. Ds is 10 and hates both sports and sportswear with a passion. On the plus side he had mastered the patronising look and saying "what do you know about fashion, anyway?" by Y1, which has stood him in excellent stead. Also he has a couple cool friends whose families buy him tops for his birthday, which have gone down well. I may consult the friends further before secondary.
