hot tubs

Yes I know they get mixed opinions on here!!

I am very tempted to get one though as they're absolute bliss for my joints. If anyone has one, could you tell me how much they cost to run and randomly, how tough are the inflatable ones: DH is worried about the cat scratching it!

How close are your neighbours? A recent thread on here said the inflatable ones were VERY NOISY.

georgedawes · 27/04/2019 19:18

Noisy due to the heater?

One set of neighbours fairly close, but they have a barking dog and a water feature that would cover most of it I reckon. Other neighbour is a further away (and deaf).

Yes, the pump or motor or something and it has to be on all the time.

PandyCuff · 27/04/2019 19:21

Following, was thinking the same

Angelinthenightx · 27/04/2019 19:44

They are a pain for neighbours, mine has one & when they go in at late at night it does my head in, if u get one then u need a summer house to put it in esp if u want to have it private.
They go away with lots of electric £4 ish a day , you need to keep the heated part on as if you switch it off it takes 24hours or so to heat.
It is noisy the heater makes a buzzing noise & when you switch the bubble bit it is very loud.
Try youtube im sure people will have a video on it.

georgedawes · 27/04/2019 19:54

I don't think the noise is an issue as I've said, we certainly won't be going in ours late at night!

Does anyone know how durable the inflatable ones are? Wondering if demon cats will pop it. £4 a day = £120 a month electric which is a lot more than I thought it would be TBH.

We have two, one in Spain and one in England. They are the solid type. We probably spend £10-£15 a month in electricity on them.

You can buy the testing strips/chemicals on-line (probably about £30-40 pounds per year.

You have to test the water daily with the strips and add chemicals when necessary.

Both our tubs are away from neighbours, but they are not loud. I think inflatables are louder.

I have back/joint problems and they ar so relaxing. Beats painkillers any day.

LookImAHooman · 27/04/2019 19:58

I think Angel might be referring to permanent hot tubs .

We often see the inflatable ones ‘on 50% off’ (basically permanently...) for about £300 in Homebase.

georgedawes · 27/04/2019 20:04

That sounds more reasonable. Painkillers do nothing but hot water is amazing!!

B&M have one for £250 and am very tempted. Really don't think it will be too loud for the neighbours, as only one set near and they are x50 noisier than us generally. Also have their own water feature. But very worried the cats will use it as a scratching post!!

The inflatables I have seen look solid. Don’t think a cat would be able to pierce it.

Just2MoreSeasons · 27/04/2019 20:19

My cat and the neighbours cat ate constantly sleeping in the hot tub lid. It's an inflatable one and been up for a year. It's fine the cover is quite tough.
Very little noise if you just soak in it without the bubbles.

Madamfrog · 27/04/2019 20:22

Størvatt do a fabulous wooden one with no bubbles and a woodburner to heat it.

Catchingbentcoppers · 27/04/2019 20:22

The only time we've been in one was at a friends house last summer. The next day we all came out in the most awful rash and DS ended up on antibiotics.

It was brand new as well, they'd only had it a week. Never again.

MrsCasares · 27/04/2019 20:26

Catching - we’ve had ours for years. Never had a rash or anything like that. Maybe your friends hadn’t got the chemicals right because it was so new to them?

Pigletthedog · 27/04/2019 20:44

We have a lazy spa (not spelt right) inflatable one. This will be it's 4th summer. We love it but my DP is very meticulous about keeping it clean and making sure the chemical levels are ok. The cats do sleep on top of it because it gets hot in the sun but they don't scratch it. Day to day heating isn't noisy but when you have the bubbles on it's a similar sound level to a hairdryer and isn't at all relaxing. I think it is quite expensive to run but we don't have it on all the time - so for example we'll switch the heat on on a Friday morning ready for a weekend of using it. The kids love it and don't treat it with the respect it deserves!

Babdoc · 27/04/2019 20:49

Catchingbentcoppers, there is an infectious condition called hot tub folliculitis, which is probably what you got from the friends’ tub. You’re basically sitting in a soup of everyone’s faecal organisms and moulted skin cells. I’ve never understood the appeal!

MrsCasares · 27/04/2019 20:55

Nothing as relaxing as sitting in the hot tub, stargazing with a glass of champers.
