How do I resign during probation?

Started a new job 6 weeks ago and it’s got progressively worse until I’ve reached a point where I know I want to resign and am happy in my decision. Just don’t know how to go about doing it? My last job the business closed and before then I had different jobs but in the same company so not officially resigned before. I’m due in tomorrow but my line manager isn’t, she’ll be in on Monday though.
Do I have to work any notice in probation period as i can tell it would mean a horrible atmosphere.

There are quite a few HR people on here who should be able to help you.

In what way has it got worse?

sackrifice · 27/04/2019 18:06

Do you need a reference?

If not, email or text to say you aren't coming back, and that the resignation letter is in the post, and that you will be self-signing in sick for the week.

AuldJosey · 27/04/2019 18:07

It's usually one week in probation period. Just print a letter, saying that you wish to resign, scan it and email it to HR. The notice will be effective from the day you send it.

GottenGottenGotten · 27/04/2019 18:08

It depends on your contact, ime usually after one month a week is required.

But honestly, after just 6 weeks, they probably wouldn't hold you to it

AuldJosey · 27/04/2019 18:09

Can I ask what industry you're in and what is getting worse? Not relevant to your question, just curiosity.

misscockerspaniel · 27/04/2019 18:23

What does your contract say? (I am not being sarcastic, just that this issue should be covered in your contract).

longhaulstress · 27/04/2019 18:24

Don’t need a reference luckily as got great managers from previous jobs.
It’s in sales which I have done parts of before but this has turned out to be a lot more cold calling/hounding people than they originally said it would be. It’s massive pressure for not a great wage and micro management which I haven’t had in the workplace since I was a teenager! It’s awful.

Can you afford to just not go back?

AuldJosey · 27/04/2019 18:31

Run like fuck!

longhaulstress · 27/04/2019 18:43

Yes can afford just not to go back with dh’s wage short term but will start looking for another job straight away. I’d rather be doing that than working my notice in a hostile environment.
I’ve never felt this way about a job before but the last 2 weeks I haven’t been able to eat or sleep properly and truly dreaded going in.
What can they do if I don’t go back?

They could sue you for breach of contract.

Realistically though, no employer is going to waste time and money suing an employee that was there for 6 weeks. Its just not going to happen.

melissasummerfield · 27/04/2019 18:59

Just write a resignation letter and say its effective immediately, you probably have a one week notice period but theres not much they can or would want to do for an employee in probation

sackrifice · 27/04/2019 18:59

They could sue you for breach of contract

How so if she gives a week's notice but takes it off sick?

Singlenotsingle · 27/04/2019 19:01

Just write and say you are resigning and giving one weeks notice. They probably won't make you work it, but they might even pay you for it in lieu.

Jb291 · 27/04/2019 19:02

Cut your losses OP. Email your resignation to your line manager / HR giving one week notice. State in the email that you will be self certifying as sick for the duration of your notice. Job done.

GottenGottenGotten · 27/04/2019 19:02

Well, as has been mentioned, it depends on the contract, which we don't know. But they won't do it. It's just not a sensible option by any stretch.

AuldJosey · 27/04/2019 19:07

I'd call in sick as per their policy for the last week, if a week's notice is what is required. Usually that requires calling in every day to say that you're sick that day. Stress is a valid illness. Just get your notice served asap. I stuck with a horrific company for 6 months and I just wish I had left after the first week.

AuldJosey · 27/04/2019 19:09

You'll also need to fill out a form so that you can receive Statutory Sick Pay for your last week. I think it's fuck all, but it's something. In probationary period it's unlikely they pay sick pay.

longhaulstress · 27/04/2019 20:19

Thanks for all your advice. Will get it ready to send out tomorrow. Can’t wait to move on!
