4 Million Lottery winners

So what's everyone's thoughts on the criminal that won 4 Million on the scratch card?

They cant provide or confirm who the debit card belongs to, that was used to purchase the ticket and don't have bank accounts themselves. Bank card thought to be stolen. Should they get the money?

I haven't heard of this. Do you have a link?

EllieMoon · 27/04/2019 14:57

Give the money to the person they stole the card from, alternatively divide it up between the 22 people they've been convicted of crimes against Grin

FiremanKing · 27/04/2019 15:11

What a pair of chancers!

No of course they shouldn’t get a penny of the money!

They bought a ticket on a debit card that didn’t belong to either of them but cannot say who’s debit card it is so the conclusion is that it’s stolen, given their criminal history.

I hope everyone in the street laughs at them.

How on earth did they think they would receive the money If they didn’t have bank accounts?

Grin

I would have loved to have been the Lottery representative that told them!

englishdictionary · 27/04/2019 15:15

Of course they shouldn't get the money. The debit card didn't belong to either of them.

Clevs · 27/04/2019 15:19

I didn't think you could pay for lottery tickets on a debit card? Thought it was cash only?

englishdictionary · 27/04/2019 15:20

I didn't think you could pay for lottery tickets on a debit card?

You can.

Thought it was cash only?

It's not.

FiremanKing · 27/04/2019 15:22

They bought a scratch card.

SihtricsHorseWitnere · 27/04/2019 15:24

Of course they shouldn't get the money! They used someone else's card without their permission to buy it.

Blackandpurple · 27/04/2019 15:25

Knobs, and thick ones and all.

Tavannach · 27/04/2019 15:25

They can't win the prize. They didn't pay for the ticket.
It's interesting to consider whether or not the card holder should receive the prize. They paid for the ticket. Probably in the T&C's somewhere that that can't.

greathat · 27/04/2019 15:27

I bought a lottery ticket yesterday for the first time in years. Paid for it on credit card which I thought wasn't allowed. Shop assistant looked confused when I asked if I needed to pay separately, did their used to be a rule about it?

FiremanKing · 27/04/2019 15:28

It’s an interesting point regarding if the card holder can be traced should they get the prize.

Livedandlearned · 27/04/2019 15:33

It says in the article that ID might need to be given if paying by debit card.

MrsPerfect12 · 27/04/2019 15:33

Yeah the card holder getting the prize would be great Karma for the crooks! Surely the card can be traced.

HotChocolateLover · 27/04/2019 15:36

Wow, I hope that was my card that was stolen and used! That would be a pretty amazing call from the police to say I was being awarded £4 million. I can dream......

planesinthesky · 27/04/2019 15:44

I don't agree that the card owner should be given the money. If someone steals your debit card and spends it on clothes, alcohol and a new TV you wouldn't expect the police to retrieve that stuff and hand it over to you would you? I don't see how a £4 million scratchcard is any different. And presumably that person has reported their missing card and been refunded by the bank, so if anything the bank has more claim to the winnings.

The scratchcard should be returned to Camelot and a new winning card released, so an actual paying customer has a shot at winning the money.

FiremanKing · 27/04/2019 15:45

Card might not be traced for various reasons that I can think of

  1. They ‘borrowed’ a card from a mate with a view to the mate reporting it stolen after they had been on a shopping spree using the card for transactions under £30 so that they could use contactless.
  1. They stole a card and used it for transactions under £30 before chucking it and the bank has written the small amounts off.
  1. They purchased other shopping making the £4 card transaction hidden amongst other shopping if the till used doesn’t record individual amounts. Might be wrong on that one.
Clevs · 27/04/2019 16:03

@greathat That's what I thought, hence my post. I was corrected though so it looks like you can now pay for them on a card!

MsLayla · 27/04/2019 17:57

The person who owns the bank account that bought the ticket should win! His card was stolen but it was still his money that purchased it. Hope he gets it. Hope the criminals get put away.

HotChocolateLover · 27/04/2019 18:40

@planesinthesky Would you turn the money down if it was offered to you by the Police/Camelot? (Assuming it was your card that had been stolen and used)

planesinthesky · 27/04/2019 19:45

Of course I wouldn’t turn down £4 million hotchocolate! But if the bank had already reimbursed me for the fraudulent transactions then I wouldn’t think that I had any legal or moral right to that scratchcard.

If on the other hand the bank had refused to refund the transactions - or if the thieves had stolen £5 from my purse to buy the scratchcards - then that would be a bit different.

MrsCasares · 27/04/2019 20:06

Money should go to charity - maybe victim support charity?
