miss the holiday excitement

Hi everyone. I've been living in Portugal for nearly 3 years now, luckily in the Algarve so it's been feeling like one big holiday. I also work for a travel company all year round and have a fantastic job that i love. I always meet and greet holidaymakers as part of this and see the excitement on their faces when i see them. There's about 10 different beaches all either a 5 minute walk (some are world famous beauty spots) or less than a 30 minute drive from my apartment and i love it. My mother (my dad is miserable and hates the heat so won't be coming) is coming to visit next week for 7 days (I'm so excited!!!), my brothers usually come out a couple of times a year and my best friend's family has a holiday villa about an hour down the road and regularly visit. I'm so lucky to have all of this and people spend ££££ to come here for their week in paradise. I just don't get excited about it anymore. I miss the build up of excitement you get when you buy some new clothes to come away, pack your case, Iron the clothes you want to take, pick your shoes etc..and are at the airport. It's just not the same when you can do it any time you want all year round.
Anyone else living abroad feel the same?

Go somewhere else for that holiday feeling! Rain forest or Jungle style holiday? City holiday? You need to stay away from beach holidays!
We dont go away for heat- if anything we go away to avoid heat (45+ in summer).

I’m also in the algarve, been here 16 years. When people ask what I miss about the UK I say ‘coming here on holiday’ as we don’t do the normal holiday things any moreSmile

I’d still rather be living here though

Tunnockswafer · 27/04/2019 13:53

Go skiing. Go to see the Northern Lights. Remember why people are so excited - this is one break, one glimpse of sunshine and beaches in an otherwise gray year (maybe over egging it here but you know what I mean!) Whereas you’re living the dream all year round.

OP I live in Cyprus and feel your pain! Fortunately good old Ryanair have added loads of new destinations; in the past year I've had city breaks in Vienna, Krakow and Budapest. Flights have worked out around 50 euros plus approximately 100 euros for Airbnb. I love getting off the plane and feeling the cold air hitting my face Grin I do always end up disappointed with the cuisine in these cities though, nothing beats Mediterranean food! 😋

@Costacoffeeplease Where abouts in the Algarve are you? I'm in Lagos. I still get excited when other people come as either have holiday and can enjoy it a bit. I'ts just the same, and obviously eating the same things lol.
I'm actually looking at having a city break holiday, only thing is I'm trying to save with my partner to buy a house at the moment and money is tight. We were looking at going to Iceland to see the northern lights, but we can't afford to do that until next year.
@HelmutFrontbut It's so true! I love the mediterranean diet, though i have to confess I had a roast with gravy last night Grin

Oh my fucking heart bleeds for you!
You live in ‘paradise’ and find it boring.
First world problems or stealth boasts?

girlwithadragontattoo · 27/04/2019 14:32

Actually looking to talk to people in similar situations.
What's your problem? Rudeness or just boredom? because it looks like both from here

You live there. It's your home. Of course it's not exciting any more. Just go somewhere else for your holidays.

HelmutFrontbut · 27/04/2019 14:39

Ha yes sometimes you just need a good old Sunday roast 😂 I love having friends visiting but in July and August they want to spend time at the beach - at that time of year I just want to hibernate under the air conditioning 😩🤪 💥

girlwithadragontattoo · 27/04/2019 14:47

@Singlenotsingle as silly as it sounds i always thought it would exciting. It still is, it's just not the same. Doesn't help that i only get paid €850 which is more than minimum here and it's hard to save and go elsewhere. Like i said i have been looking at Iceland, even looking at a road trip and driving to Italy maybe in the Winter (i can't take time off between June-September).
HelmutFrontbut we have Iceland here and i have to confess i do go mad every couple of months with things I've been craving. I couldn't get a battenberg cake for ages and you know when that's all you want but can't get it. I'm currently craving a greggs donut Grin thankfully one is being brought over for me hahaha. I now find in the summer that i actually prefer to hide indoors as well

NannyRed, what? Living abroad doesn't make life perfect, we still have to deal with daily shit. Money troubles, relationships and bereavements aren't easier just because the sun is shining.

I’m in carvoeiro
