Would you eat cake baked by a colleague?

Recently someone had a significant birthday, and two colleagues brought in home made cakes. Both beautifully decorated.

Yet a couple of people declined a slice, saying they never eat home cooked anything because they can’t be sure what the food hygiene was like.
I was a bit stunned. Am I just slow on the uptake or is that normal now?
I “get” not eating cake if you’re on a diet or just don’t like cake.

You just say, 'No, thank you' and leave your issues out of it. Yes, I would eat the cake.

Yes I would eat the cake.

I have many many friends whose homes I've eaten in and who've eaten in my home, a love of food and cooking is one of life's special treats.

How very strange there are so many who refuse to eat food made by other people, I've never come across this or heard about it in IRL.

No need to be rude, just say you're not hungry, surely?!

Were they of the generation mainly raised by the internet by any chance, OP? I feel the finer points of social interaction are oftrn missing altogether from some younguns.

I’ve happily eaten home made cake at work - but all my colleagues were fellow doctors! It was safe to assume they all knew as much about food hygiene as I do.

How rude, they could just say no thanks or say they aren’t hungry. No need to bring food hygiene into it!

I’ve just started a new job and there’s a lot of cakes ALL the time, and I think they’re thinking I’m a bit strange as I never have any. My reasons are that firstly I have a couple of food allergies so I tend to avoid food other people made as it can be embarrassing for them and me to have to ask about the ingredients (people tend to feel badly if they didn’t cater for an allergy they didn’t know I had!) and secondly I just don’t really like sweet stuff that much, and if people do start catering for my allergies I’d feel bad for not eating it when they’ve made such an effort (has happened in the past).

So I just said I don’t really like cake etc and left it at that. No need to go into details.
