Wtf is going on with my fridge freezer?

Went to get something out freezer (the joys of ageing and late night sweats) and found it SEEMED to have been left open, but there's only dd and I in house and this is not something dd would usually do I certainly wouldn't

Then went to get something out fridge (all one machine) and it was frozen solid!

Is the food safe? Frozen stuff mostly still feels solid - but so is stuff in fridge

What on earth? Am I gonna have to throw out a fridge and freezer full of food?!

I'm on a tight budget so really hope not.

Our fridge freezer did the same once when we left the door open - apparently the freezing element (or whatever it is) sensed the door was open and worked overtime to overcompensate for it and froze the fridge stuff. My tomatoes were as solid as snooker balls!

I'd probably chuck freezer stuff if I thought it had defrosted significantly.

Ok thanks for reply, really hoping I don't have to chuck a freezer full!

Anyone else? I really don't want to have to throw all that food out

I wouldn't throw away the freezer stuff if it was still solid, but I wouldn't keep the fridge items as they are only intended to be kept chilled and freezing will probably have a detrimental affect on the structure of the foods.

We've often had items start to freeze if they've been touching the back wall of the fridge, but only ones in contact, not merely close. Seems bizarre that everything has been affected...
