What is everyone reading? In a rut.

I'm in a bit of a reading rut.
I read a lot as I don't sleep well but it's also my time to destress before bed. I love reading, usually have a couple of books on the go, one an easy read and the other catching up on things I think I should read iyswim.

I've just started Vanity Fair but not massively into it. Halfway through Lolita but stalled as I'm finding it extremely uncomfortable reading.

What are you reading just now and would you recommend it?

Have you read any of Jodi picoults books? They’re really good, make you think.....
I’m currently reading a book called together by Julie Cohen - it’s an easy read.

And I’ve just read ‘why mummy drinks’ which was a diary form style so very easy to pick up and put down.

happypotamus · 26/04/2019 22:44

I recently finished The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne. That was really good, I would recommend it.
I am usually reading 3 books at once: 1 that I read at bedtime, 1 in my bag that I read on the way to work and 1 on my kindle that I read while supervising DC in the bath and waiting for DD to go to sleep.
I am currently reading:
All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr which is good so far
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult, which is ok so far but I think might disappoint me in the end
Here I Am by Jonathan Safran Foer, which is a bit odd, a lot of the dialogue is characters having a lengthy argument with each other, and I don't know enough about Judaism to understand all the references.

Thanks, I'm going to add the ones I haven't read to my list.
I have read a few Jodi Picoult books but not recently.
I got given Why Mummy Drinks at Christmas and it was better than I expected, I quite liked it.

I just finished (beginning to end in one day!) Vox. Sort of Handmaid's Tale lite but quite thought provoking. I thought the lead character's taste in men was a bit backward but maybe that's just me or perhaps it was making a point about her internalised misogyny?

TooMinty · 26/04/2019 22:52

Also The Bees by Laline Paul is amazing and Children of Time by Adrian Childs if you like sci-fi.

Figure8 · 26/04/2019 22:53

Have you read Educated by Tara Westover?
Seriously inspiring 💜

TooMinty · 26/04/2019 22:55

Adrian Childs?! I meant Adrian Tchaikovsky!

Mokepon · 26/04/2019 22:55

I like all genres and will read pretty much anything.
I like being introduced to books I'd never think to pick up myself. Several here I haven't heard of.

I enjoyed 'a thousand splendid suns' and 'the kite runner', as well as Robert Harris' 'Munich' lately.

ScrambledSmegs · 26/04/2019 22:59

Just finished Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantello. It was good fun, sort of Famous Five meets HP Lovecraft, nothing serious but easy to read. A bit gory at times but I skimmed anything that I found too unpleasant. I needed a break from the more serious (or more truthfully, takes themselves too seriously) fiction and non-fiction I've been reading recently.

I've now got The Familiars by Stacy Halls. Again, takes itself a little too seriously but I'm rushing through it as have to return it to the library by Tuesday - blooming one week loans!.

My pile of unread books is currently massive so I've promised myself NO NEW BOOKS until I'm at least halfway through it. It's going to take me ages.

TooMinty · 26/04/2019 22:59

Read The Bees, it's the best book I've read for years. The main character is a bee but so well written that you really empathise with her.

ScrambledSmegs · 26/04/2019 23:01

*Edgar Cantero. Sorry, I'm not sure what my brain did there Blush

SparklesandFlowers · 26/04/2019 23:01

I love the Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde - start with 'The Eyre Affair'. Full of literary nods. Very cleverly written.

If you want a one-off, read 'The Princess Bride' by William Goldman. Particularly good if you've seen and enjoy the film.

cardibach · 26/04/2019 23:01

I’m reading CJ Sansom’s Shardlake books. The main character is a lawyer in Henry VIII’s London. The first one is called Dissolution. They are mysteries but have interesting historical detail.

ScrambledSmegs · 26/04/2019 23:01

I loved The Bees. I lent it to everyone I could!

blibblibs · 26/04/2019 23:02

Well if you read anything then I would recommend Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.
It's a time travel love story but more than that and a pleasant easy read. Currently 8 in the series with number 9 due out later this year.
I'm embarrassed to say that I'm on my 3rd read through Blush

Mokepon · 26/04/2019 23:02

Looks like I'll be reading The Bees so!

I really liked why mummy drinks. The next one ‘Why Mummy Swears” is probably even better.
I’ve joined a book club to help tell me what to read. Just finished Children of blood and bones which I would never have picked up but enjoyed. Before that ‘The Last’ by Hannah someone which was a great read

grumpypug · 26/04/2019 23:09

I've just finished Homes by Abu Bakr al Rabeeah and I am currently reading I am Pilgrim and The Curious Incident of the dog in the nighttime. I like to have a couple of books on the go.

Charley50 · 26/04/2019 23:09

Read I am Pilgrim. It's a thriller and is more than gripping.
I couldn't get on with the Bees. Only read a couple of chapters. Should I try again?

Charley50 · 26/04/2019 23:10

SlightAggrandising · 26/04/2019 23:20

Madeline Miller is excellent. Start with Achilles & then Circe. So good.
