When I first left home and moved into rented furnished accomodation I bought a set of tins, one of which was a tea caddy. That caddy has been in daily use since, and that is coming on for 40 years. At the same time I also bought some kitchen utensils. The potato masher is still going! Every time I use it I idly wonder how many tons of potatoes I have mashed with it over the years.
What have you got that has lasted well? Not necessarily kitchen stuff, just anything.

Singer Featherweight sewing machine manufactured in 1938 and passed down in the family. I have been using it for 40 years.

pallisers · 26/04/2019 21:03

oh and dh has an evening suit that was worn by his grandfather. he wore it to all his college balls (couldn't afford to rent one)

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 26/04/2019 21:08

I am wearing thermal socks I stole from DH when I met him in 1995.

My mum has Tupperware in use that predates me and I'm 45 this year.

Our denby dinner set was a wedding present in 2000.

I bought towels when ds1 was born. They are still going strong and he is 17 this year.

PaintBySticker · 26/04/2019 21:22

I have an M&S men’s towelling dressing gown I bought for university 25 years ago.

Freshprincess · 26/04/2019 21:30

I'm sitting on a 20 year old M&S sofa. Apart from a few marks on it, it's as good as new. The upholstery is a bit dated.

I don't know how anyone keeps electrical goods for so long. I break everything after a while. Ive never had a hairdryer last longer than 2 years.

cardibach · 26/04/2019 21:54

Many things. I have 3 pieces of post war utility furniture given to me by my parents when I set up home. Towels from before 22 year old DD was born. A sweatshirt which is at least 12 years old. I don’t throw things or replace them unless they are worn out if I can help it.

Onesmallstepforaman · 26/04/2019 21:54

Clock/radio/cassette that I bought when I started work in 1978. Set of stainless steel pans we got at the ideal home show 1987. Another set of stainless pans inherited from my uncle 1995. My grandad's carving knife, older than me.

tanpestryfirescreen · 26/04/2019 21:58

My dad uses the clothes horse his mother bought in the 40s
My best roasting tin is 38 years old.

gnushoes · 26/04/2019 23:01

A treadle singer sewing machine which belonged to my great grandmother and still works. A kitchen devils bread knife and tuner/amp bought at uni in late 1970s. Record player from about 1975. Ancient kenwood. Utility sheets. Denby plates, etc going strong since wedding nearly 25 years ago.

Wincher · 26/04/2019 23:08

For some reason I have a thermal vest that my aunt wore at boarding school in the 1970s, which I still wear every winter. It has her name tape in it. I also still wear a pair of shorts with my name tape in them which I got for a school camp in 1992 when I was 11. They even still fit, somehow! I regularly use a set of casserole dishes my parents had as a wedding present in the 1970s.

Livingthedream12345 · 26/04/2019 23:17

I have my mum's old microwave which she bought in 1994. I've got my parents cutlery and crockery that was their wedding present in 1963.

MotherofMigraines · 26/04/2019 23:18

A green comb bought for me by my mother circa 1980 and used daily since then. Cost per use probably the best value item she ever bought...

Flobalob · 27/04/2019 00:40

I bought a set of 4 cast iron saucepans from IKEA in their sale for £5. That was 20 years ago and still use them every week. Bought my can opener, sieve and plates for when I started Uni in 1996. Still going strong.

Flobalob · 27/04/2019 00:42

My Dad handed me down some cutlery that I imagine were bought in the 1970's. Every time I use them, I think of him.

Flobalob · 27/04/2019 00:44

My Dad made me a wooden child sized clothes horse when I was a child in the 80's. Still got it now. My kids know that they need to be careful with it but I'll never get rid of it as he made it for me.

SpaceCadet4000 · 27/04/2019 00:52

My Grandma bought a Mason Pearson hairbrush in the early 1970's, she gave it to me in about 2008 and I used it for a few years until I bought my own smaller one which fit in my travel bag. I gave it to my sister who has used it ever since.

My childhood teddy was bought for my Dad when he was born... my Dad is 56! I took him to bed with me until I was about 22, at which point said bear was 50. The poor bear won't manage a 3rd generation- he's safely sat on a shelf now.

RainbowMum11 · 27/04/2019 01:06

A wooden garden table & chairs that were cheap to buy (1st house), I've never varnished/painted them and they are still going strong 16 years later!

Weegobshite · 27/04/2019 02:19

Some silver serving spoons given to my great-great-granparents for their wedding gift from great-great-great-granparents in 1882.

HerRoyalNotness · 27/04/2019 02:29

I was given a wooden spoon in 1993. Still used it daily. 2 years ago it dropped on the element in the dishwasher and burned on the handle. I was going to keep it and hang it on the kitchen wall but my son decided to snap it where the burn was. I should have still kept it. I haven’t found another spoon like itZ. The ones I have now get kind of burr with use. I need one like my old one, it was probably a very cheap spoon to begin with.

incogneto · 27/04/2019 02:41

DMs had a Morphy Richards whisk for 22 years, still going strong now

user1493423934 · 27/04/2019 02:55

Parents bought a tv, washing machine and dryer before I was born (42 years ago). TV and washing machine only died about 5 years ago, my mum still uses the dryer, it still works really well!

Longdistance · 27/04/2019 04:27

When I bought my first house 20 years ago I bought loads of things from Ikea. I bought a black plastic spoon and small spatula set that cost about 50p. It’s also been to Oz and back in it’s time and is used daily. I had it before I met dh and he loves using it to cook with.

My dm still has pots and pans from her home country that are older than my dB who’s 45.
