My neighbour has installed an ornate bird bath

And the amount of bird shit all over my conservatory and patio has quadrupled!!

Is it a thing for birds to have a massive shit after a bath? I know my DDs love to shout 'I need a poo I need a poo' mid-bath hair wash! What can I do to minimise the bird shit. Don't get me wrong I love birds but the neighbours have form for feeding them moldy bread that attracted rats (but fortunately their pest control people told them to put a stop to that) and now this bird bath means extra bird shit! Our outside furniture and patio are covered and they've only had the bath 2 weeks and we've only had the furniture out a week.

It may just be the time of year and unrelated to the bird bath... I’ve got loads on my trampoline that’s happened in the last couple of weeks

I would doubt it has anything to do with the birdbath and more to do with birds starting to nest. It is possible you have some nesting in your eaves.

BogglesGoggles · 26/04/2019 09:29

Maybe go around an explain that their garden is too small for them to attract birds. Show them a picture of the state of your garden. They probably just don’t realise.

I've got a lovely 🐦 bath but the birds never go anywhere near it

UCOforAC12 · 26/04/2019 09:32

@Redshoeblueshoe perhaps you could swap with my neighbours? Grin

It well just be a coincidence but we've both lived here for 10 years + and it's NEVER been this bad before!

I too doubt it's the bird bath.

Spring has sprung - the number of birds in my garden over hte past few weeks has jumped hugely. I don't feed them or have a bird bath. I do have an untidy a wildlife garden though. Loads of robins and wrens nesting in the hedge and blue tits, great tits and black birds everywhere.

Can you get a cover for the patio furniture?

UCOforAC12 · 26/04/2019 09:35

@Seeline we do but it leaks so we haven't bothered yet but good point as at least it would keep the shit off!

My cat is a ‘birder’, he has a HUGE prey drive. We’ve seen a LOT of birds in recent weeks. As PP say, spring has sprung, there’s plenty of food around, bellies and therefore, bowels are full. Hence your pebbledashed patio.

Hanumantelpiece · 26/04/2019 09:48

I have a birdbath and haven't noticed an inordinate amount of bird shit around. Perhaps she's feeding the pigeons laxatives?
Seriously if a food source has suddenly become available locally (more feeders put up by people, or more trees producing nectar - our local pigeons enjoy decimating the blossoms on cherry trees) then that's more likely to be the actual cause of the pooping.

wellspankmyarse · 26/04/2019 09:49

i`ve a well used bird bath. the shits about the same (minimal). is a nesting bird dropping baby bird poo parcels? tends to be away from the nest and possibly same area.

We had a completely awful neighbour who installed the most ghastly lighted fountain in the astroturfed patch of lawn that he HATED anyone touching (shared garden) which the local foxes absolutely bloody ADORED. Every night they came with 4 half grown cubs and frolicked in the light, playing hide & seek and... digging up the astroturf. It was fab. He kept putting down Cat Off to dissuade them, but not being cats they didn't give a shit.

Good times.
