Irish MNers - where's cheap to live within an hour of Dublin?

As the title says.

Ideally, that's an hour by public transport. If you can do me half an hour and it's not ridiculous, I'd love to know. Basically I know nothing about ROI, but I have had a job offer in Dublin and know it is very expensive. I would be looking to rent a room in a house, or a very cheap flat.

Any ideas?

Roughly what part of Dublin is the job based in? (Area code like Dublin 2, Dublin 4, or street/area). You won't get a flat by yourself, unfortunately, the rental situation is lousy. Room in a house/flat share more likely. The area of the job will help direct house locations, depending on public transport. Fyi Daft.ie is a rental site and I think my home.ie has a rental option too. Is the job offering any relocation finance/assistance?

3girls - YY, a flat or house share is what I want. It's Dublin 2, but I meant, an hour from any part of Dublin itself. There's no relocation package.

chilled - thanks!

Look at Swords? Decent bus links, near airport as well.

Rubymay · 26/04/2019 00:14

Public transport is good from Drogheda, Balbriggan, swords. I'm near Bettystown & is commuter belt area( right beside the beach)

Good direct bus links to D2 so, most suburbs/towns in neighbouring counties may work for you. A few to look at of the top of my head: Crumlin, Drimnagh, Drumcondra, Lucan, Maynooth, Celbridge, Palmerstown, Rathcoole. You could extend your search to include North Kildare/some parts of Meath/Some parts of Wicklow (which includes some of the above). Good luck.

Thanks doza, that's very useful!

rubymay - thanks!

Another question - does anyone know about renting caravans in these areas? The reason I'm trying to rent cheaply is that my partner and daughter won't be moving with me, and I am wondering about renting somewhere that couple double as a possible cheap holiday home?

I really don't mind if I'm way away from Dublin, if it is very cheap. I'm just totally new to Ireland and need a crash course in what the different areas are like.

www.rent.ie/rooms-to-rent/dublin/swords/room-type_double/sort-by_price_up/

Two Dublin bus routes to Abbey Street and 2 express routes to the Quays ( one is privately operated but pay with same leapcard as Dublin bus)

Thanks 3girls.

Maynooth might suit you. It's a student town and if you just need a room you could find one. Has rail and bus links to the city.

Bray - some parts are a bit rough but you might find a rental there. Has train and bus links and is south of the city, same side as Dublin 2.

Shankill, not as far south as Bray, coastal, residential with some apartment buildings. Dart and bus service.

Gorey, County Wicklow. South of the city again, with rail and bus links.

Carlow, another college town, bus and rail links. An hour from Dublin.

Thanks very much, that sounds really useful!

Donabate might have caravans but where they are situated is a good distance from the train station.
Bettystown / Laytown area also might have caravans to rent.
