Things that have shocked me as a cleaner

I have 15 clients a week

95% use ‘disposable ‘ wipes

90% don’t recycle (I root through their bins & recycle but it’s obviously only 1 day a week)

Hooded. Not bidder(?)

stucknoue · 26/04/2019 08:00

You aren't my cleaner! I recycle and use reusable and green cleaning techniques - I moan at her for her love of paper towels!

SolitudeAtAltitude · 26/04/2019 08:01

This is why I don't want a cleaner.

I don't need to be judged on how I keep my house!

Fresta · 26/04/2019 08:02

We ought to take a leaf from our parents and grandparents book with regards to being environmentally friendly in the home. My mum used to have a rag bag which was full of old clothes (mainly my dads old vests) which she regularly cut up and used for clothes around the house.

MotherOfGodFella · 26/04/2019 08:11

@Kaddm

Ok well a cloth and spray or soapy water is fine in most of your situations surely?

wipe bird shit off car - use a cloth

Wipe random nasty stuff off school trainers ready to re pack in bag - boot buddy if really dirty. Or a cloth.

Wipe up pet turd accident - kitchen roll

Wipe dogs face - wet cloth

Wipe up accident of elderly family member - kitchen roll or cloths/flannels

Wipe food spillage from floor. Ok you can use cloth but with wipes you can gather the food and get a new wipe - kitchen roll and finish with a cloth

Quickly wipe all work surfaces - a cloth

Wipe kids fingers in car - wash hands when reaching destination

Wipe raw chicken from work surface - cloth

Clean exterior of grimy school bag - cloth

Just use a cotton cloth for most of these then wash them. I don’t keep cloths for a separate boil wash or anything. I would probably bin it if it’s been used for poo but have generally just rinsed and washed.

MsLucyHoneychurch · 26/04/2019 08:20

Anyone remember the rag and bone man and his horse and cart?

Dyrne · 26/04/2019 08:35

Fresta and MsLucyHoneychurch the thing is - we have less need for ‘rags’ now as there are other more environmentally friendly ways of getting rid of old clothes - second hand shops, jumble sales, eBay, Facebook etc.

The only bit of clothing I probably actually throw away are my old holey pants every so often, and no doubt if I tried to offer them to a cleaner to use for a rag they’d be posting a ‘shocked’ message on here...

ElectricDreamz · 26/04/2019 08:37

Yes and I still remember the call he did to let people know he was about

Ivegotthree · 26/04/2019 08:40

I'm always surprised by people who leave dirty dishes etc in the sink. That is basic laziness and not what a cleaner should do.

Our house is very tidy, no crumbs as we hoover and clean all week, and our cleaner just cleans ie hoovers, cleans the bathroom and kitchen etc.

KennDodd · 26/04/2019 08:48

Sorry if this has been answered already but when you say wipes, what do you mean? Do you mean baby wipes and toilet wipes for cleaning dirty bums? Or disposable cleaning wipes for dusting?

GabsAlot · 26/04/2019 09:14

eco warrior me? thats hilarious im the least type of warror i know

i said theyd be banned soom enough as its all over the news about fatbergs mostly made up of wipes and it being pointed out they have ti banned

what did u do before wipes

Dyrne · 26/04/2019 09:39

GabsAlot I agree with you - flushing wipes down the loo is terrible, even the ‘flushable’ and ‘biodegradable’ ones definitely shouldn’t be flushed. That doesn’t mean they should be banned outright and make life harder for a lot of families with disabilities, should it?

As for what I did before wipes? Honestly, I cleaned a lot less as I was a child or a smeggy student! They’ve been around for donkeys years anyway, they’re not exactly a new invention...

bibbitybobbityyhat · 26/04/2019 10:20

I do fervently hope wipes will be banned soon.

I grew up in an immaculately clean and well kept house where the kitchen cleaning cloths were cotton dishcloths bought from the supermarket and cloths for other rooms were old cut up t-shirts and vests, or old sheets that had been worn through, or yellow dusters. What is so difficult about using these?

I don't even remember kitchen paper towels being a thing in my childhood.

SimonJT · 26/04/2019 10:26

I wonder how many people demonise wipes, but are happy to destroy aquatic environments with laundry detergent, kitchen sprays etc.

MsLucyHoneychurch · 26/04/2019 10:38

Dyrne - I was asking if anyone remembered the rag and bone man. Bit of nostalgia.

MsLucyHoneychurch · 26/04/2019 10:46

And charity shops sell a lot of donated clothes on for rags. They're popular with mechanics, I hear 😃

mydogisthebest · 26/04/2019 10:53

Where I live lots of the neighbours don;t seem to recycle at all. It really annoys me. It is mainly the youngish ones too (thought youngsters were meant to be concerned about the planet!)

Thisnamechanger · 26/04/2019 11:06

Things that shocked me as a cleaner:
I used to work in a boarding school during my A levels and uni, in the holiday lettings period when the foreign students came over for various sports and language camps.

One group of girls left soiled knickers and used tampons in the showers. It wasn't just one of them either, a few girls in the same group did this (maybe weird cultural difference??).

One pooed on the floor. BOAK.

But the one that pissed me off the most was a group of REALLY loud entitled American soccer girls came over which their vast parents who smiled constantly and stood too close to you when they spoke. One soccer Dad really passive aggressively accused me of stealing his daughter's loose change (wtf?! Why would I want 5p and 2ps? I don't even want my own!) and another really patronisingly 'congratulated' me on being a cleaner in the uni hols but the worst thing was the little shits had a take away and left the crap everywhere...when I picked up and upside down empty carton on the floor a giant fucking spider ran out from under it. They'd obviously trapped it and just left it there and because the place was a tip I didn't realise. I had to be fed tea and biscuits for the rest of my shift til I'd calmed down and stopped swearing.

IntoValhalla · 26/04/2019 11:17

PaulHollywood True story Confused It was utterly rank. I refused to clean it, put a not on the door explaining why, took photos and went to show my boss. She was shocked too. In the end, as it was classed as some sort of biohazard, they had to get another company in who were more equipped than us to deal with that sort of stuff.
Same as the time I went into the downstairs communal bathroom on a Monday to find that someone had been drunkenly sick all over the place over the weekend and just left it there.

Thisnamechanger · 26/04/2019 11:28

GeneandFred omg you've seen this too? WHY would anyone poo in a shower

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/04/2019 12:31

Wrong of me to take the credit for it?

Not wrong at all.

You've arranged it, so the entire credit is yours.

Well done You! Grin

RiversDisguise · 26/04/2019 12:40

I loved the person posting that she didn't pay someone to judge her. As if you could forbid any free person from forming their own private opinions.

I don't understand this wipes thing. Are people cleaning surfaces, benches with these? Don't they leave streaky perfumed gunk everywhere?

IntoValhalla · 26/04/2019 12:53

Thisname the only time I’ve ever heard of poo in a shower is from a friend who’s a prison officer - apparently is common because it’s easier to fish smuggled goods (drugs/SIM cards etc) out of poo in the shower than risk it going too far down a toilet and unretrievable Confused

Catchingbentcoppers · 26/04/2019 13:56

@Dyrne it's still better than wipes through don't you think?

I'm just trying to do my bit for the environment. Not holier than thou, not better than anyone else, just a concerned 52-year-old mum who hates the way things are going on our planet right now.

Some people don't give a shit, some do.

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/04/2019 13:59

Holes Lol. I didn't say I use wipes or don't recycle, I just said I would resent being judged for it.

Anyway, true that this could be my cleaner rooting through my bins and judging my ass. I would hope they just got on with their job though and cleaned my house!
