How does a beginner retrain in Computer Programming?

I’m a career changer, pretty decent on computers and ideally would like to learn coding and eventually get an entry level job in IT.

Does anyone, ideally already working in IT, have any advice for me please, eg where to start, recommended courses etc? Thank you Flowers

If you’ve got the time and the money (usually 3 intense months and a few thousand) and you’re very serious about starting a career in coding then I’d suggest that the fastest way to get there is to do a coding boot camp. Just make sure you do a lot of research and pick a reputable one with strong industry contacts.
If you’re still investigating whether it’s right for you though then there a lot of online courses; Udemy is a good start.
If you’re a young women then ‘codefirstgirls’ is also great to get a good flavour.
Best of luck!

All of this ∆∆∆

I work in IT and currently doing my OU degree in it and with coding I have found that you have to really enjoy it and have lots of ideas about what you want to create to be able to enjoy learning it. I don't. I am so not a coder so going down the Change/project route instead

I hadn’t even thought of OU!!! I will take a look at boot camps as well thank you. As a starter I have a few sessions booked with a private tutor via Tutorful. Excited.

Interested in any responses too as i am learning programming.

Like pp has said, you really need to know what you want to do. My oh is an IT engineering and knows next to nothing about programming but has done lots of courses in Microsoft stuff and is very experienced with computers generally.

Programming (as i understand it) is more for web development, ap/software creation and can lead to jobs like software developer rather then IT.

My background is in 3d design so i am learning it to eventually get into environment art (gaming) and using 3d creation tools like unity and unreal engine.

Start with what you want to do and look up some jobs on what it requires.

Im currently learning python as a first language then will move onto c ++/c#. the languages will have a direction too as some are more commonly used in specific areas.

I have been using free you tube videos and udemy. if you search for tutorial videos you can usually find discounted udemy courses for £25 or less in your subject.

Code wars is good for when you get more into it and need practice.

I wish i could take some time out and do an intensive course or bootcamp but im on mat leave and there just isn't the flexibility at the moment. I also don't want to drop that kind of cash while im still figuring out what i want to do.

Oh I wouldn't recommend OU if it's pure coding you are after (I'm doing a general computing and IT degree). Udemy will give you some ideas of what language you fancy but an intense boot camp would be your best bet. if you are in Scotland I've heard very good things about CodeClan Scotland.

I have done something similar, started with online courses like Udemy, Coursera. These are free or reasonably priced, and will give you a chance to figure out what type of coder you want to be eg data science, web design, software development, etc.
I have my courses on my CV and they are positively recognised at interviews and by recruiters. Also look out for local STEM/coding groups, there’s lots of them about, Meetup is a good place to look. Many run coding sessions to work on programming or have various talks.

Thanks everyone. I have started a Udemy (free) course (Intro to Python) and found FreeCodeCamp.org which looks amazing and allows you to build projects and gain certification. Good luck to all of us Smile
