What used to be called "political correctness". Meant to indicate that you've "woken up" to see injustice and oppression all around and now you're fighting to right the wrongs you perceive in society.

MindyStClaire · 25/04/2019 08:21

I would think of it as being aware of social injustices, and in particular being aware of the discrimination faced by groups someone isn't aware of. So, a white person who recognises that black people face micro aggressions etc.

On MN it seems to be used disparagingly about people who support trans rights, but that's not the use I see in the wider world/internet.

I would see being woke as a positive.

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 25/04/2019 08:21

Is it specifically to do with perceived transgender injustice or any injustice @Xiaoxiong? I see it linked with trans issues a lot but I'm not sure.

MindyStClaire · 25/04/2019 08:26

Any injustice IAmRubbishAtDIY.

Started as African American Vernacular English term for politically aware. Became a label embraced by the uncritically self-righteous. Now used to mock such people.

BroomstickOfLove · 25/04/2019 08:29

It means concerned with social justice. It's what in the past would have been called being politically correct or right on.

Xiaoxiong · 25/04/2019 08:47

IAmRubbish yes I agree with Mindy - it's meant to relate to any injustice and as such is a useful concept - you may have been "asleep" to the injustices others suffer because you yourself haven't been a victim of them.

But, like political correctness before it, when applied to unusual or marginal situations, being woke/PC/right on starts coming back on itself and giving perverse results that were never intended and I would argue that trans issues are one of those (see eg. the cotton ceiling). That's probably why you've heard the term linked with trans issues.

MockerstheFeManist · 25/04/2019 09:38

In the language of previous generations, it denotes that you are with-it and not one of the squares, Daddio.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/04/2019 09:42

It's a term that has been hijacked for ridicule. It's now used rather disparagingly to describe individuals who are now 'aware' of political and social injustice in society.
