Flying short haul, budget airline with toddler

FartyBug · 24/04/2019 21:14

Toddler is 21 months, I've never flown with DC before.

I need to travel short haul on a budget airline very soon, I won't have a car the other end but may need a taxi, can I take on a car seat? A pram?

Any advice for flying as I'll be on my own with toddler, luggage, etc.

Trying not to panic!!

Thought I'd add, no tickets booked yet but it's urgent I do as they're going up. I'm sure any advice will help but definitely a no to flying with RA.

You will be fine, don't panic. You can take additional items, although as it's just the 2 of you, you need to limit what you take as you need to toddler wrangle plus get luggage! When you say pram, do you mean actual pram?? Lightweight buggy for travelling purposes much easier.

Most airlines as far as I'm aware will let you out the pushchair in the hold but you can use it in the airport till the gate & hand over at boarding. As under 2 can sit on your knee but my d's was long at that age & a 2h r flight was not comfortable for either of us. I think you can book a seat for your toddler but they have to be in your knee for tariff & landing. I've never taken a car seat but any taxis we used had them so was fine. We flew with EJ & BA hth.

No, not a pram. I did mean a flimsy buggy which is lightweight, I can put it up and down one handed. I'm worried about also taking a car seat (if I can even take that as well), a suitcase, etc. I'm in two minds about whether I can go without the buggy and take the car seat alone. I've not flown in a couple of years and can't remember if there are seats in the luggage things at the airport (like trolleys) for toddlers to sit in?

If the taxi the other end is only for a short journey, i would be inclined to take buggy only, so you have somewhere safe to put dc while you get luggage. Is it possible to just take a small case and then a rucksack, so you don't have too much to carry? Whatever happens, it will be fine!!

Sensible advice from others and I am glad you have chosen not to fly with the airline run by Mr O'Leary.

Which airports to and from?
Just trying to think how you can walk with toddler and bags through the airport.
When I flew back from Oz to the UK with dds on my own I had dd2 in a carrier on my back.
I had a buggy car come collect us at Heathrow which saved my life.

Most airlines let you check in two pieces of baby equipment choosing between buggy, travel cot, car seat etc. Then you get whatever luggage allowance you have. And you might get to take an additional change bag on the plane. But you need to check the airline website as they all have slightly different rules.

Thank you all, this is why I love MN!

@Longdistance did you have to pre-book it? I thought they were only for those with mobility issues.
