At what age did your little one no longer nap?

Curious as my little one is taking longer and longer at night to go to sleep. He's 26m and I'm wondering whether I should now stop him napping?

How many naps is he having and for how long?

Thecomfortador · 24/04/2019 20:42

Mine really struggled between ages 2-3 to get through the day without a sleep. Bed times were a nightmare if he didn't nap, and he'd play up from about 3pm onwards. He's 3 yrs 4 months now and has started coping a lot better although will happily sleep in the car. Maybe reduce the length of nap at first? I found just having 15 minutes was enough to keep him going at age 2 most days, without impeding on bed time.

My youngest stopped napping at around 15 months old 😩 if he has even a short nap now, at 22 months old, he will not go to sleep until 10pm!

My other children were between the ages of 2-3 years old. I always knew when they were ready to drop a nap when it started taking them longer to fall asleep at night.

My eldest gave up regular naps between 9-10 months and gave them up altogether by about 14 months and my youngest was still napping when he started school. They have always been polar opposite when it comes to sleep though.

MamaOfWobbles · 24/04/2019 20:44

@Ginger1982 he's having 1 nap at about 12:30 for anywhere between 20mins to 2 hours (normally it's about 1hour though)

3 and 1/2 before she was ready to give up her midday nap 😀 it's much better without it though but I do miss it!

TillyTheTiger · 24/04/2019 20:46

Since about 2yo I've been limiting DS's naps to 45m max, otherwise it takes him too long to get to sleep at night. He's now 2y11m and has just about dropped the nap altogether, which has made bedtime much easier.

Ideatcakeforbreakfast · 26/04/2019 12:57

My DS is nearly 4 and dependent on how busy he's been he will often still nap. He still naps for at least an hour at nursery and if he's had a very active morning at home he will nap for a couple of hours. He still sleeps 11 hours at night. Likewise if he's not had a very busy day he can cope without a nap but tends to have to go to bed a little earlier in the evening.

Bingcankissmyass · 26/04/2019 14:59

My dd is 3yrs old and still naps for 2 hours in the afternoon! She goes to nursery 3 mornings a week 8-1 and she often asks to go for a little sleep after, but I have wake her after an hour or else she wont go to bed! She does have some days where she wont nap, those days she starts to drop off about 4pm and is a nightmare at dinner time 😖 But she sleeps at least 11 hours at night, so I'm not too worried! Although I'm thinking its soon time to stop her naps altogether in preparation for school!

Merename · 26/04/2019 15:05

I dream of these children that still nap at 4! Interesting there’s such a variety here. DD1 gave up around 22mo, and like some have said, if she had even a 10m catnap in the car wouldn’t be able to get to bed at a normal time. DD2 just 7mo so maybe I’ll be blessed with a longer napper this time.

Do you notice any difference at bedtime when his naps are short?

Flicketyflack · 26/04/2019 15:09

Somewhere between 2 1/2 and 3 yrs old Sad

Redears3 · 26/04/2019 22:41

My DD dropped her cot naps from about 11 months. She would sometimes fall asleep in a buggy or car journeys. Although my friends kids would be having 2 hours naps up to 3yo mine DD NEVER napped like that - 45mins to an hr max. She’s always been a good sleeper at night Grin

RocketPockets · 26/04/2019 22:46

My little one will be 3 in a month and I'd say he naps maybe twice a week. Sometimes more if we happen to be in the car at the right time & he tends to nap more for my mum than for me!
If he's slept well at night he needs it less but sometimes will have 3/4 naps in a week and sleep well at night and then it'll flip. I kind of let him lead it at the moment, he's pretty good at saying yes or no and meaning it when I ask him after lunch if he wants to sleep. Sometimes all he wants is an hour of quiet time on the sofa watching a film or just some music etc.

Vinorosso74 · 26/04/2019 22:52

At home around 2 3/4 which was good as it was also the right time to ditch the buggy which was mostly used for naps in the last couple of months. She napped for an hour the 3 days she was at nursery as she was up earlier but stopped at 3.

Ownerofmultiplechimps · 27/04/2019 10:24

My ds1 was a hideous sleeper & didn’t drop daytime naps till 4.5 coinciding with the time he started sleeping through. Ds2 has only just turned 2 & is no where near ready to drop them. Still naps between 2-3 hrs a day & is hideous without them. He goes to bed fine but does wake at 5 & needs a drink, fresh nappy & cuddles before he’ll go back to sleep till 7 ish (later on weekends).

MWNA · 27/04/2019 18:26

My 4 and a quarter year old stopped napping at 4. We still have daily rest time where she goes to her room and watches a film. The whole house has downtime from 12-2. We all do our own thing and then regroup for the rest of the day.

Happyralphymummy · 27/04/2019 18:33

Both of mine only stopped having naps when they started attending F1 at school, age 3 years and 4 months. By the time we got home and had lunch it was too late to fit in a nap.

HyggeHeart · 27/04/2019 18:40

18 months and 22 months with my two

MsLayla · 27/04/2019 18:44

3.5yo

MontStMichel · 27/04/2019 18:58

My twins had 2 x 2 hour naps a day aged 2, and slept well all night. I found the more sleep they had in the daytime, the better they slept at night! Otherwise, they fell asleep over their tea, were too tired to eat and then woke up hungry at midnight!

They dropped the daytime nap around 4, and it was horrible! Overtired!

yoursworried · 27/04/2019 19:04

Mine both stopped napping just over 2. They both slept a good night though

Nettleskeins · 27/04/2019 19:34

3 or 4 years old. And one continued to have impromptu naps where he would fall asleep whilst playing mid afternoon, if there was quiet time... Lots of exercise, lots of sleep (including a nap), and shift bedtime a bit later is my advice..nothing worse than a completely overtired 4 year old at 6pm... I used to have a nap too tbh. we always had a quiet time where nothing happened between 1.30 and 3pm, never went out then for example..

Billballbaggins · 27/04/2019 19:36

Child 1 was just over 2 (damn near killed me as I had a newborn at the time)
Child 2 was 2 and a half then started sometimes dropping them, totally done by age 3.
Both got (and now get) 12hr at night

HideAwayForSoLong · 27/04/2019 19:59

3 years and 10 months here still often has a nap, they still have enforced quiet time after lunch at Nursery and a couple of them still nap.

tappitytaptap · 27/04/2019 20:04

About 2 yrs 9 months, he's 3 yrs 1 month now and has one maybe once a fortnight (falls asleep in the car on the way back from somewhere or we force him to have one if he's clearly tired and emotional Grin). I really miss the peace of naptime!
