Family travel insurance - do you have to always travel together?

I'm confused. Kids are late teens now and doing their own thing holiday wise - I want to sort out insurance for all of us - do I still do a family policy or individual?

My family policy finished at 18, kids had to travel with one of the adults. I found another that covers student through 22, as allows independent travel but is £££ more!

Read the small print. Different companies will probably have different definitions of family/child/adult etc and also rules on whether people can travel alone or if anyone/everyone has to be together.

At some point an insurance company is going want an adult child to have their own policy rather than use their parents family policy, otherwise people in their 40s etc might decide to use the insurance provided by their parents bank account etc.

We have a joint policy that covers both of us together or either one of us separately, but I don't know if all policies work like that.

It would depend on your specific policy.

Whatever travel insurance you sort out, you need your children to know what the exclusions are if they're travelling with other families or with friends. Some exclude things like bungee jumping, renting a moped etc

Depends on your policy. We have annual cover that defines a family as related individuals living at the same address. We also don't need to be travelling together, we are covered individually too.

They nearly all exclude activities like that unless you pay extra for various different levels of hazardous activity cover. If someone is doing typical 'gap year' activities they probably need to look at a specialist policy, because there are also limits on length of trip.
