The cat has blocked the toilet...

...unintentionally of course! DH has been emptying cat poops down the downstairs toilet and it has now become blocked with what I can imagine is cat litter. I am so cross with DH!!!
Does anyone have any tips on how to clear the blockage?

What sort of litter was it? I got a plastic rod thing with a sink unblocker and have used that to clear obstructions in the toilet. Depends how close the blockage is though as to whether you can reach it or whether it's further along the pipes. Plunger?

Bananalanacake · 24/04/2019 07:50

do you mean cat litter in the toilet or just the poo? don't you have an outside bin.
sorry, don't know as I don't have a cat.

Fixed that for you.

I thought the cat had fallen down!
Sorry but you will need to get the plumber out I think. I decided to wash out the litter tray (I had emptied it) in the bath but some of the litter went down and I had to take out some piping underneath to shift it.

BlackCatSleeping · 24/04/2019 07:53

Is it the clumping litter?

Try plunging it, but if he’s been doing it a while the pipes might be blocked.

RosamundDarnley · 24/04/2019 07:53

It's been a while since I had a cat but cat litter is clumping and is designed to go in the refuse bin, surely?

BlackCatSleeping · 24/04/2019 07:55

I guess he has been scooping out the poops and flushing them.

dementedpixie · 24/04/2019 07:56

Not all cat litter is clay based or clumping. Apparently you shouldn't flush cat poo anyway due to toxoplasmosis risks. But yes, it should be binned rather than flushed

MidnightLavender · 24/04/2019 07:59

Whenever I used to empty the cat poops, they would go in scented nappy bags and in the outside bin. It turns out that since DH has been emptying, he has flushed them down the toilet!!!!

BlackCatSleeping The litter we use is the wood pellets Hmm so I think we are truly screwed?
I think we will try a plunger.

RosamundDarnley it is DH as he is my husband it did not need fixing but thank you for the concern.

I think you’ve missed the point of Rosamund’s fix, OP. It was pointing out that since your DH is the one entirely to blame for the problem, then he is the one who should be sorting it out.

RosamundDarnley · 24/04/2019 08:20

No problem. Wink

MidnightLavender · 24/04/2019 08:21

Thank you Decumus and apologies Rosamund for misinterpretation - 5 week old DD has not slept for more than 30 mins last night so I’m not with it this morning.

@DecumusScotti that's it. 👍

RosamundDarnley · 24/04/2019 08:22

No worries. Hope you get some rest soon.

mummmy2017 · 24/04/2019 08:23

Try putting some washing up liquid down the loo...
Leave it for 10 mins then flush.

DontCallMeShitley · 24/04/2019 08:26

Try a wire coat hanger bent into the shape of the pipe and push/break it up. Clumping litter might be easier to break up as it kind of goes into a mushy lump, then flush a lot or put buckets of water down.

dementedpixie · 24/04/2019 08:30

Wood pellets should disintegrate as they turn to dust in the tray. It would be worse if it was clumping clay litter. Try the coat hanger thing (wear rubber gloves)

1tisILeClerc · 24/04/2019 08:37

All drainage pipes should be roddable, with an access point (or in fact several) outside, in the off chance that the blockage is not in the loo itself.
If it has 'clumped' in the water trap you may need a hand or plastic tool of some sort to break it up.

Branleuse · 24/04/2019 08:48

has he thrown a whole cat tray of litter down the toilet??

I would get a rod and try and break it up

Mississippilessly · 24/04/2019 09:28

Crikey, we have wood pellets and I flush the poo.
Hope you get more sleep soon Op.

Bluesheep8 · 24/04/2019 10:06

Why on earth has ANY cat litter been flushed down the loo? Of course it's going to block it, whatever type it is. And if you think how absorbent wood is...I'd say you need a plumber. And to put it in the bin in future!

Langrish · 24/04/2019 10:08

You can buy a sulphuric acid drain clearer that will do it. But fgs be careful if you do! I’d be inclined to get a plumber.
