packed lunch ideas for DofE

DD needs to rltake 2 days worth of packed lunches with her on her 2 day trek.

cool bags are not allied.

day 1 - I think she can just about get away with sandwiches etc

day 2 - I'm really stumped for ideas. ham sandwiches won't be possible as great risk of food poisoning, as with anything fresh and perishable really.

any experienced d of e'ers out there who can advise.

they've worked out dinners and snacks between them so it's just DDs lunches I need to sort.

DD is doing hers this summer. They had a meeting at school last month where they were put into pairs and it was suggested that they choose food together. DD suggested to her partner that one of them bring pasta, the other a sauce and so on.

We've given her a couple of Army rat packs to try and so far the boil in a bag has proved a hit.

(2 weeks of rat packs in one go. At least that's what I was once told by some people in the RN way back when I used to work with them I remember with horror surviving for 10 weeks on 'Menu E' thanks to a lazy bastard in the stores who didn't think to mix up his order - Pork Casserole on repeat... still gives me the rage)

@DobbysLeftSock Really glad to see someone say this! When I did D Of E (admittedly about 15 years ago now!) they were really strict with what we could have - we had to have two courses in the evening and it had to be cooked, not just reheated. But that was a right mission 😂

John west tuna or salmon salad. Freeze pitta bread so they can defrost on first day and fill with tinned sandwich filler.

MRE - meals ready to eat from places like Go OUtdoors. They can be eaten hot or cold, better than existing on pot noodles and the like.

We used to make them cook a breakfast as well - though we did offer to carry their eggs for them if they wanted! Now they mostly do the instant porridge and I would let them claim it as cooking if they added some raisins or something. You can't do a day's hiking on a cereal bar! Particularly in the Yorkshire dales - one year their tents froze overnight, another the remaining snow drifts on high ground were taller than they were on some sections. They all did it though!

I've heard he's partial to a spot of smoked salmon and caviar 😉

When I trained as an assessor it was made clear that they needed to cook - not simply heat up a ration pack or add boiling water to noodles etc.

Yes ours have to cook 3 courses and a hot drink in the evening and cook breakfast in the morning. Proper cooking, not just heating up a packet.

My DS has his this weekend as well, he's going shopping with his mates tonight god knows what they'll buy 😬

They do have to cook for the evening meals but the OP asked about ‘lunches’ . None of mine have been required to stop and cook lunch.
For evening meals pasta is good, and a boil up sauce, maybe with mushrooms or a tin of sweet corn. Eggs would obviously break and someone I know had a dc who took bacon and ended up with food poisoning so I would steer clear of meat .
