Fun/interesting places to visit/things to do in Athens, Greece ??

Does anyone know of any great interesting or fun places to visit in Athens (Greece), especially suitable for those in their mid-20s?

Thanks :)

Oh and if cheap/free, even better! Don't wanna spend too much time/effort travelling from athens to another major big city if we can avoid it (unless there's something further out that's really worth it).

There are a few really good and free walking tours of Athens. Our guide was a friendly Australian / Greek guy and he was a wealth of knowledge. He also chased pickpockets away!

Wonderful handmade market in Thisseo, I used to sell macrame jewellery there years ago Smile Monistiraki has a flea market and lots of interesting junk shops. Loads of wonderful architecture around there too and of course, the Acropolis. If you like hiking, mount Parnitha is spectacular.

The Acropolis museum is €10 (€20 in peak season) and absolutely worth it.
There are some lovely rooftop bars opposite, A for Athens is a lovely rooftop bar with fantastic views.

Oh, and make sure you try a bougatsa! Pastry with vanilla cream and cinnamon. I die and go to heaven every time my Greek DP brings them home.

Lycabettus Hill - you can see for miles and miles and miles. You can walk up to it or get a cable car. It's not expensive.

Piraeus is good fun too.

I loved Athens- we went for our first anniversary in November.

We had a lovely couple of hours wandering the little streets of Anofiotika, and finished up at a cafe called Yiasemi for lunch.

We had delicious meals at Simul Gastronomic Situ and Scala Vinoteca- I very much recommend both!

Go to the panathenaic stadium just before sunset (you can find out times from a weather app), climb up the steps on the left side of the entrance and watch the sun set behind the acropolis. Stunning.

You can do the same up lycabbetus but it's more well known to tourists so always busy at this time. The stadium not so much.

You get amazing views over Athens from the bowling centre in piraeus. Best seen at night time when the city is all lit up. The food is good there too.

I recommend Lake Vouliagmeni, it's a thermal, natural lake you can reach by bus from the city centre. It's not too expensive to get in and swim and the lake is filled with those tiny fish that eat your dead skin so you also get a free foot spa! We went in April and it was warm enough to swim. The lake is cut into rock so it's very pretty. The town is small but there are some nice beaches to look at after. Made a nice change from the city centre.

We went to an escape room game in Athens which was great fun.

Ooh we LOVED Athens! Agree with all of the above, plus would recommend going to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. It’s slightly out of town but there are bus/tram routes. I want to say don’t google it because we came across it without any idea and we were AMAZED; and actually went back twice in the 10 days we were in Athens. Absolutely stunning, and completely free to walk around. If there’s an event on even better, as those are free as well.

There’s a multi ticket you can buy that will get you into 7 of the ‘big’ ancient sites including the Acropolis; which was well worth it IMO - Aristotle’s School was a bit of a let down but everything else had enough old ruins to keep it interesting, plus we’re different enough from each other to not be too repetitive!

If you’re there on a Wednesday (?) evening go to the Observatory and they do an English tour - lovely old building with lots of history, plus you get to look through the telescope!

Agree with looking at bike/walking tours - that was how we discovered the cultural centre.

The Gas Works is also really interesting and I think was only a couple of Euros for a self-guided tour - it’s also an arty events space if you're Into that sort of thing.

We also did a maritime museum which had some really interesting stuff in it (though a bit crammed and disorganised!

It was a bit of a way on the tram line, but we also went to the Sea Turtle rescue centre which was small but interesting, and it’s a good charity to support.

Ooh and also Athens is really good for Craft Beer, if any of your group are into that.
