What dodgy thing might my 12 year old have been up to?

So my 12 year old DS went out on Dunday about 11am on a bike ride with his friend, then playing out in the streets with kids from 8 to about 14. When he came in at about 8pm he had what look like burns on the inside edge of both thumbs. He couldn't give me an answer about how he got them after a lot of questioning he decided they were off gripping the handle bars of his bike but I'm sceptical this is the case. Who would grip the handle bars so tight to give themselves friction burns. Surely you would stop before they got as bad as these are if you hands were getting rubbed from the handlebars? I'm suspicious because his explanation when he came up with one sounds unlikely but at the same time I cant think what dodgy thing he could have been doing to get them. Any ideas?

Lighting fireworks?
Crumbling cannabis resin (very unlikely, mostly weed these days isn't it)?

blackcat86 · 23/04/2019 17:55

Trying to light the spray from a can perhaps?

Hot sweaty day with cycling activity? Handlebar friction burns seems reasonable.

fluorescentorange · 23/04/2019 17:58

Pulling wheelies would cause friction burns in the inside of his thumbs.

Herefortheduration · 23/04/2019 17:58

I believe his handlebar story

zucchinicourgette · 23/04/2019 17:58

If his gears are changed by rotating the inside of the handlebars it’s totally plausible. Even that’s not how his gears work I would believe it especially if he’s been riding off-road or down steep hills.

zucchinicourgette · 23/04/2019 17:59

All the other suspicious activities mentioned seem like you would get burns in one hand not the other.

TeaStory · 23/04/2019 18:00

When I was a kid I used to get huge nasty blisters there riding my scooter, so he could be telling the truth.

Bunnybigears · 23/04/2019 18:20

Hmmm ok maybe I should give him the benefit of the doubt, his gears are changed by a twisty bit on the handlebars.

Sounds legit to me as it’s both thumbs

RidgedPerfection · 23/04/2019 18:34

Sounds plausible to me; often got sore hands from cycling for long periods of time.

QueenBeex · 23/04/2019 19:13

If he was telling the truth, why did it take him so long to say the reasonConfused
Surely you'd just say oh that's from riding my bike earlier. You wouldn't need time to think of the answer to the question if you are telling the truth. But on the other hand I can't think of any other reason he'd have them on both hands. Tricky one I guess!

DS has friction burns/blisters in the exact same place!

He’s on his bike constantly
