Is anyone else inundated with those teeny tiny black flies at the moment? Indoors and outdoors I am noticing them everywhere.

The one's I find commonly are tiny green ones.

These are about the same size as green flies, but black! Not sure what they are called but they are bugging the hell out of me when I have the windows open!

Fruit flies probably if it has been hot they come out in droves they feed off everything

MayFayner · 23/04/2019 10:04

Fruit flies. You’ve got to put bananas, tomatoes etc away and make sure the food bin is fully closed.

gamerchick · 23/04/2019 10:06

They lay and hatch in soil as well. I had to ditch a large plant once as it got too much. Stagnant water they lay in and stuff like mop heads also.

You can put traps around, like cidar vinegar in a glass, cover in clingfilm and poke some holes in. They get in but can't get out.

I thought they might be fruit flies, I've been making sure the bins are emptied but I may have to move the bananas to the fridge! I'll try the cider vinegar trap thanks! I've been keeping the windows closed but I could put one of those on the bathroom windowsill as it needs to stay open after a shower really.

I wouldn't put bananas in the fridge. They don't do well.

CadburySpira · 23/04/2019 10:20

That's why I haven't until now, but anything to make sure these flies don't keep coming in!

Just put your bannanas in a cupboard they will ripen and stink your fridge out . Because the weather has got better drain water is fermenting those little buggers are having a party

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 23/04/2019 10:21

We had these badly last year, we had to put all fruit and vegetables away and make sure dirty plates etc were put away quickly, and we seemed to get rid of them. They haven't been back, touch wood!

MollysLips · 23/04/2019 10:27

I get these when there's anything overripe in the fruit bowl -- but I also had a really bad load of them when there was a lot of water in a deep saucer underneath a plant pot.

Thank you for all these tips, v helpful!

Somebody suggested on another thread to pour a kettle ofboiling water down your kitchen sink might help

CabbageHippy · 23/04/2019 11:09

I always keep my banana's in the fridge & they last for ages - the skin goes black but the insides are perfect still.
