England and St George

By Maxwell Dunlop

I have but one thing on my mind
A passion burning bright,
Crossed by my heart a fiery red,
On a field of the purest white.

The light shall not fade on England now,
The fields be forever green,
The Character, charm that is England now,
In my heart means everything.

The rising sun on the sleepy hills,
The twinkle of morning dew,
The running stream to the river's flow,
And on to the sea of blue.

The light shade shall not fade within my eyes,
Nor stifle my mind within,
My ears will not want whilst still the sound
Of the song that the blackbird sings.

The light shall not fade on Castle Walls,
Nor the heroic deeds of man,
The bells will forever ring so clear,
In the churches of our land.

The light shall not fade whilst vigil be,
The eye of Heaven bright,
For our cause be true and our loyalty be,
In trust with our red crossed knight.

The Knight shall not fade on England now,
The fields be forever green,
The character, charm that is England now,
In my heart means everything.

If you were properly English, you'd know that such things are not discussed in public.

SaskiaRembrandt · 23/04/2019 07:57

Yes, it's very bad form to show off like this, ffs, we're not American.

It's to do with the history of conquest, empire and oppression. Sorry

We know.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/04/2019 08:17

Oh leave her alone you grumpy bunch!

SaskiaRembrandt · 23/04/2019 08:19

FiremanKing I think his colonial ways are rubbing off on you. Do you need someone to stage an intervention?

Bloodybridget · 23/04/2019 08:21

Happy St George's Day - and Shakespeare's birthday. The latter wrote better about England.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/04/2019 08:23

I don’t think St George ever came to England did he?

SaskiaRembrandt · 23/04/2019 08:23

Saying that, interventions are not very English. I'll rephrase: do you need someone to give you are gentle punch on the shoulder and tell you to stiffen your upper lip?

SaskiaRembrandt · 23/04/2019 08:25

Shakespeare's birthday. The latter wrote better about England.

He did!

I think George was Turkish - but as far as I'm aware he had no connection with England. He wasn't the original patron saint either, he supplanted St. Edmund, who was actually English.
