I’m basically getting my son assessed privately for adhd as the wait in my area is 2 years and I have to decide which secondary school he goes to this year. I want someone who works privately aswell as within the nhs. I have come across someone and had contact via email. I found him on Bupa’s website which then cross reference him to a more local private practise and he works within the nhs in west London as a consultant. Privately he’s a psychiatrist, those are his details on Bupa and the private practice website, he says he is a consultant in west London within the nhs. Isn’t a consultant quite generic? Doesn’t that mean he isn’t a psychiatrist within the nhs?

Consultant is the level of his NHS job - is the top, fully qualified level - so he’ll be a consultant psychiatrist (unless perhaps he’s qualified in two specialties).

You can check their registrations on the GMC website and I expect the royal college of psychiatrists as well if you search.

You can look on the GMC website under check a doctor's registration and can see if on the specialist register for a particular specialty eg psychiatry. If on spec register then is eligible to apply for consultant jobs and work in that speciality privately.
