Ds2 (13) has suffered from terrible hay fever over the last 3 summers. It makes his life a misery even with the full gamut of prescription drugs and his brown inhaler. He was hospitalised last year with a bad asthma attack and ended up wearing clear glasses every day to try to reduce the symptoms.

We live very rurally (in a National Park) and are surrounded by trees, farmland and have a big garden and paddock. Pollen is everywhere - for example my car is covered in it. Both my dc go to school in our nearest city but even though his school is right in the middle of the city he really suffered last year. I think perhaps it was all the oil seed rape the bus drove past on the way to school.

Anyway, he has been having acupuncture since March and so far so symptoms of hay fever at all. Nothing. Nada.

The reason for my post is to ask if you have hay fever has it kicked in yet? Are you suffering? I can't believe that with the amount of pollen around we have escaped but it does seem to be the case. I'm holding my breath big time but would really appreciate hearing your own experience so far this year.

None of the rest of us suffer and most of dc's friends have been away for Easter and/or live in the city so it's hard to compare.

We live in the south of England if that helps.

TIA

Tree pollen for me, I’ve had symptoms since February, getting really fed up with it now. At least I don’t suffer from grass pollen unlike my poor DH who suffers from both.

OP would you recommend acupuncture ?

I am in rural Kent and am very allergic to oil seed rape which is all around us. I have been sneezing for weeks ! 😷😷

DS1 (12) has been suffering this weekend. He uses sodium cromoglycate eye drops, antihistamines and beconase (I know it's adults only but it works) and they do help as does showering and then putting Vaseline in nostrils. Windows shut and fan if necessary.

My hay fever has also developed into ‘Oral Allergy Syndrome’ which means I can’t eat fruit that is grown on trees unless cooked, it’s all very boring, my latest problem is getting a reaction when peeling potatoes 🙄

catofaragon · 22/04/2019 21:55

I don't have any allergies and have never suffered from hay fever but think I've developed it this year. I've been struggling for the last 5 days - blocked nose, sore throat and woke up gasping for breath the other night. I'm in my 50s so am baffled as to how I've suddenly developed it.

QueenofCBA · 22/04/2019 21:57

I am allergic to every pollen known to man and used to suffer lots, then I took part in an acupuncture trial for hay fever when I was at uni, nearly 20 years ago now. My hay fever completely vanished for about 5 years afterwards. I now have quite mild hay fever which I can treat with a daily dose of cetirizine.
Fingers crossed for your ds!

Itscoldouthere · 22/04/2019 21:59

I developed it in my late 40’s, it came out of nowhere! I keep hoping it will go away but so far no luck.

Aquilla · 22/04/2019 21:59

My mum had acupunture for hayfever when she was 19 and absolutely swore by it.
I always find taking my medication the night before helps to ensure they've kicked in properly in the morning.

MaFleur · 22/04/2019 22:43

Yes, about a month now. GP told me to start early (first time I had asked for help) and combination of fexofenadine, Beconase, and eye drops mean that my main symptom now is wheezing. Fortunately I have an inhaler left over from a chest infection which is really helping, so I will be revisiting the GP to say thank you for the advice and please can I have a new inhaler.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 22/04/2019 22:43

Yep and it seems worse this year, I never had it before having dd. It was one of the things I developed during my pregnancy with her 7 years ago, each year it seems to get worse. The last 2 nights I’ve woken up at around 4am, nose and eyes streamings, scratchy throat itchy eyes. I have benedryl which I won’t take unless Its absolutley necessary.

pregle · 22/04/2019 22:46

I was pretty bad yesterday but that was the first day it seems to have affected me. The only summer I didn't have any issues with hay fever at all was when I had acupuncture on a weekly basis (it was for something else but I did tell the acupuncturist about suffering with hay fever) so hopefully it'll work for you little one. It was so odd and amazing not having to worry about pollen counts!

ClinkyMonkey · 22/04/2019 23:57

DS(10) is allergic to grass pollen. His symptoms hit him out of the blue and with full force on Sunday.

I had forgotten just how miserable it is for him, poor wee soul.

iMatter · 23/04/2019 07:51

You are absolutely right pregle. I've become so used to watching the pollen count and getting to grips with the different pollen seasons so this feels very odd!

In the past we started his meds early before the season kicked in to give him a head start but he hasn't needed anything so far.

I guess I just can't quite believe what a difference the acupuncture seems to be making, especially as we are literally surrounded by trees laden with pollen, oil seed rape and thousands of acres of forest and grassland.

Long may it continue....

I really hope those of you who suffer manage to get some respite. It really is the most miserable thing.

I’m in the south east and had bad hay fever for a couple of months now. Luckily it’s not an asthma trigger for me though so just nose and eyes.

Wow2806 · 23/04/2019 08:13

Yes in Manchester
Been suffering the last 4 weeks and its getting worse.
I've noticed also it started last year and is worse now that I am itchy everywhere. No change in products. So wondering if that is another symptom.
If it doesn't start to clear up soon trip to the doctors I think
