What would you use this cupboard for? (pic included)

We have this large floor to ceiling cupboard in between our open plan sittingroom and kitchen diner. It's an amazing space and gives us loads of storage, but the problem is, it doesn't have any defined use so ends up as a messy dumping ground for every random shite that traverses our house Hmm Wrecks my head because I'm normally a tidy person. This is like my Monica room 🙈

The shelves are over 90cm wide. The electrical and kitchen appliances need to stay as we don't have another cupboard big enough for them. And I like keeping my makeup there as it's in easy reach in the mornings when I need to slap it on in a rush. But everything else needs to go.

What should I store here? We already have enough storage for plates and cups etc.

It just looks a bit disorganised to me. I'd stick like things together eg all the drinks on one shelf, all the teatowels together. If you actually don't need to be storing much in there and have homes for other things, leave it empty. I'd love an empty cupboard - I have to be careful when I pone mine as things jump out at me!

PeanuttyButter · 22/04/2019 19:15

I'd buy storage boxes and group items together the best you can

brattypatty · 22/04/2019 19:17

I wouldn't mind leaving shelves empty but DH will come along and fill it with random crap Hmm I cleaned it out and reorganised a few weeks ago and it's like this again now, mainly due to him. So I figure that if each shelf has a proper designated use and is filled adequately, there won't be space for dumping.

I would prefer my cupboard of room to be small, out of sight and used seldomly, not a ginormous cavern of daily use items 😂

Definitely storage boxes with labels on. Fill them with something...just to stop him filling them. Give him one 'random' box. (My OH would also fill it with stuff.

MerryMarigold · 22/04/2019 19:29

If everything already has a place, why ask? I'd keep everything for entertaining/parties in here like table cloths, candles, vases (I could fill that with vases), napkins, jugs etc. Maybe also ask birthday items like candles, banners etc. I'd also make space in food cupboard for drinks rather than have them in there. You could fill up with boxes (IKEA fabric ones for the kallax are nice and deep, also v cheap) so there's no room to dump stuff unless it's in a box. One box could be dh's adhd when it's full be need to sort it out.

onegrapeshortofabunch · 22/04/2019 19:31

I would use it for wrapping paper, craft materials, board games and buying things in bulk!

TanMateix · 22/04/2019 19:32

I would have the small appliances at the top and DIY tool boxes at the bottom. I would save the bottom drawer to store gift paper etc.

Ivegotthree · 22/04/2019 19:33

We have one of these in the same place as you and I fill it with rugby boots, kitchen gadgets eg Magimix, tool box, and extra groceries when I buy stuff on offer.

Also my vases live there, and the children's flippers!

(ie yes, totally random shite)

SunshineCake · 22/04/2019 19:46

Homebase and the range have some nice baskets. I can link if you'd like to see them.

brattypatty · 22/04/2019 19:47

General consensus seems to be keep filling it with random shite then, just hide the random shite in boxes Grin

Already have a cupboard for party items and wrapping paper. Actually, we have an art and craft cupboard at floor level in the kitchen that wrecks my head cos 2yo keeps ripping the contents out. Maybe I could switch that stuff to a high shelf in the big unit and use the floor level one for the drinks and small electrical stuff.

And yes, spam me with your pretty storage baskets please Grin

I have 3 that I bought in poundland's last week that I can start off with Smile

I would just open it, stare for a couple of minutes then close it again, job done.

whitehalleve · 22/04/2019 20:07

If that was in my home I'd split it down the middle and only have shelves on one side. Then I'd stick my Dyson, tower fan and ironing board in the non shelf side. Those things always get on my nerves and I need to find a new home for them!

PanamaPattie · 22/04/2019 20:21

Could you turn it into a pantry with your electrical items on the bottom? Use any spare food cupboard as your hidden junk space.

loobylou10 · 22/04/2019 20:38

Bogofs and bulk buy heaven!

KindergartenKop · 22/04/2019 22:02

I'd use it to store bottles of coke and beer, a food mixer, my slow cooker, kitchen towels and 5000 Easter eggs.

IncrediblySadToo · 22/04/2019 22:11

That would do my head in!

However, if the things in there don’t have another home, then they are fine in there, they just need tidying up and death threats issued to keep it tidy 🤷🏻‍♀️

I would love that for eleventy billion different things. This house has NO built in storage and it drives me to 🥃

safariboot · 22/04/2019 22:16

I could put about half our board game collection in there, it'd keep the dust away from the boxes.
