What age do you teach DS to wee standing up?

Just that really. I have 2 young boys, one still in nappies. The other is almost 4 and goes sitting down. I don't see any reason to change this anytime soon, as I feel it's easier for him to not cover himself in wee. His father thinks he should go standing up. He can't reach to see standing up without a step and gets it on his clothes every time he's tried. We have a step at home but obviously won't elsewhere.

No need to teach him to do that at all.

HalfBearOtherHalfCat · 22/04/2019 19:39

DS just decided that he was going to be like daddy when he was about 2.5. He's 3.5 now, and has actually got very good aim... probably better than his father Hmm

My son is also 4 and has been standing up for a wee since he was 2, used a step to start with but hes tall enough to wee in the loo. Makes more of a mess when he sits down.

My son is also 4 and has been weeing stood up since he was 2, hes tall enough to point his winky and the more he watched his daddy the better he got. I agree with your son on this. My boy makes more of a mess when he sits down to pee.

Ds learned when he was around 3. However... initially he tended to enjoy the 'no hands' approach if not watched like a hawk which didn't end well. He then progressed to holding his todger with a hand, but was very easily distracted...so if you spoke to him mid-flow he'd turn his whole body to look at where the sound had come from, spraying everything for miles around! The fun of stand up weeing is endless Hmm

I tried I don't need to teach him to see standing, he can do that quite well! More to teach him not to see on his clothes, floor etc. He never makes a mess sitting down so I'm happy with that. If he tries to stand he always gets it on his clothes at the end, the last dribble. Also, there's carpet in the bathroom (I know, I know just not in a position to have it tiled yet)

DH introduced them to the idea when he was at home with an ‘I’m going to the toilet, do you need the loo as well?’ And off theyd go together so he could show them how to stand and aim. There was a point when they got a bit complacent, weeing standing up on their own and making a mess. But they’d certainly be helping me clean it up! In their own way, I’d clean it properly, they’d do a bit of a wipe with a j cloth, but lesson learned.

They mixed between sitting and standing depending on what they felt like doing. Now they mostly stand and my loos are spillage and smell free.

I can't remember when but I rue the day.

cathay123 · 22/04/2019 20:00

Biggest parenting regret ever! Don't do it.

DS is nearly 4. Been toilet trained for about a year. He always sat down and I never commented on it. Just this last week he said he wants to stand as that’s what some of the boys at nursery do. So far he seems to have reasonable aim ...

Rainbowknickers · 23/04/2019 13:29

My son (when I only had two) used to watch his sister and I pee sitting down-until he started nursery and copied the other lads-I just bought some corks and told him to aim at those xxx

Sleepinglemon · 23/04/2019 14:51

As soon as we potty trained. Really easy when out and about if he needs a wee (against a tree, behind a bush etc...). Not really had much of an issue with him missing the toilet either. Although SIL did with DN. She got these floaty balls for him to aim at that go in the toilet bowl and problem solved.

kaytee87 · 23/04/2019 14:57

My nephew was toilet trained standing up which is really annoying as he pees on my toilet seat and gets it on his trousers/shorts. He's 4.5 now.

My 2yo has shown no interest in peeing in the toilet but plenty of interest in peeing in his bath or all over my garden.

museumum · 23/04/2019 15:08

My ds was about 5 before he was comfortably high enough above a normal toilet like ours at home.
He had done standing wees outside (in the woods not the street!) from the start and at school (tiny toilets) from when he started school.

museumum · 23/04/2019 15:09

Also i'd say he was close to 5 before he could be relied upon to remember to put the seat up and do it without dropping it on himself.

Sparrowlegs248 · 23/04/2019 18:15

I think the main issue is that when he's finishing his wee, the stream tails off and gets on his clothes. I don't know what he could do about that really!!

Dh is 41 and pees sitting down. Apparantly you empty your bladder better sitting down, plus no spills. So there is no benefit to standing up for a pee (according to DH, I haven't verified his claims)

NoWordForFluffy · 23/04/2019 19:04

You have to make sure they stand close and shake properly, Notta!

Equimum · 23/04/2019 19:43

DS1 started just before he turned 4, when he saw other boys at nursery do it. DS2 is nearly that age now, and happily sits. Will leave it that way for as long as he is happy.
