Home grocery delivery

ShannonRockallMalin · 22/04/2019 17:26

I'm unable to drive at the moment due to illness which may not resolve for some time. For the first time ever I'm going to dive into the world of home grocery shopping delivery. I'd like recommendations on which service to use bearing in mind the following:

I usually do big shops at Aldi and top ups at a small Tesco.
I'm a fairly frugal shopper and I'm not bothered about about brands expect for one or two things.
The condition that's stopping me driving is eyesight related so I need a clear easy to use website.

Suggestions please!

I use tesco home delivery, I've tried Sainsbury's & Asda but always end up back at Tesco - I like the shopping app as I can select items from my favourites.

Be careful when buying (I've bought 9 bananas only to discover I ordered 9 bunches! And thought I was buying a large size Greek yoghurt to last us a week, but it was a teeny one size portion Grin)

Asda I find is cheaper than the rest. They have good customer service but quite often have to substitute (no exta cost). It never bothers me though as I’ve always been sent something the same / similar enough.

Sainsburys I find quite expensive but they have a good introductory offer of £18 off a £60 shop which you can’t complain at!

GreenEggsHamandChips · 22/04/2019 17:35

Tesco. With a tesco credit card. Those Clubcard points do actually add up

Bloocy · 22/04/2019 17:36

Although it’s not one of the cheaper options, Ocado have 30% off your first order plus free delivery and a free tea towel at the moment!

If you have time, you could do your shop on each website then compare prices/when they can deliver/cost of delivery etc.
I find writing down a shopping list then searching and adding to the online shop is easier than browsing.

Morrison’s is better quality wise imo. And never had a substitute or missed item with them either. Asda half the bloody order is substitutes. And they’re always really polite. The booking slots fill up really quickly here though.

GabrielleNelson · 22/04/2019 17:41

Ocado's website is exceptionally easy to use. If you make use of their offers it isn't that expensive. They do a lot of own brand stuff of their own and they also have a lot of Waitrose own brand lines. They price check against Tesco. I take that with a pinch of salt, but I do occasionally get a voucher from them if they've found my shop would have been a bit cheaper at Tesco that week (pennies, usually, but it all helps!).

Their delivery service is also extremely good and reliable. You can book a 1-hour slot for your delivery, e.g. 7.30-8.30, 8-9, 8.30-9.30.

Ocado also runs the delivery service for Morrison's. You get Morrison's food and Ocado service, I assume. Haven't tried it but may do next year when Ocado stop stocking Waitrose food.

GabrielleNelson · 22/04/2019 17:42

Forgot to mention that I hardly ever have substitutions from Ocado.

Redglitter · 22/04/2019 17:43

I'd recommend Tesco. Always arrives on time, very few substitutions & the drivers are lovely.

I hated Asda. Customer services were poor & the last driver I had was horrible

RavenLG · 22/04/2019 17:47

Oh and Morrison’s do wonky veg online it’s basically exactly the same but very slightly misshapen and it’s a fair bit cheaper

QueenOfTheHighCs · 22/04/2019 17:48

Another massive vote for Morrisons, who in the 5 years I've used them, have only had substitutes about twice! I've tried all of the others and really think they are much better.

ShannonRockallMalin · 22/04/2019 17:51

I know this is probably a really stupid question but do you have to live within a certain radius of a store for delivery? I've mainly seen Tesco, Ocado and Morrison's vans about near me.

Tesco is cheaper than asda for the stuff I buy. Proven by myself and price comparison sites.

Tesco also have MUCH better customer service in my area.

There's a couple of times I've given the wrong card details and Tesco have been lovely enough to ring up and get payment over the phone.

Asda however give you no warning, they send you a text saying the order has been cancelled. You then have to redo the order and hope you can get a slot for the next day. Only the refund of your money takes a few days, so if you're skint like I was you're stuck with no food until you get the money back. Customer service couldn't help apparently.

(I realise this makes it look like I'm always getting card stuff wrong but I've used online shopping for years and years and had lots of cards over that time that I forget to switch over)

LegoCake · 22/04/2019 18:01

Ocado with money off for first order. Surprisingly good value if you buy offers or unbranded stuff. The website is good, no substitutions and they e-mail you a receipt before it arrives with the expiry dates on so you can plan in advance what you will eat what day (we never seem to have any room in the freezer)

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 22/04/2019 18:04

Avoid asda! We had countless substitutions, no show deliveries and when we wanted to cancel and order, they just gave us vouchers for their service thinking we'd actually go back!

xine15 · 22/04/2019 18:19

No you don't need to be within a certain radius, we live 5 mins from a Morrison's but the delivery comes from a depot over an hr away. Not great for the environment so we try not to do this anymore if we can avoid, but sometimes we have to (and sounds like you are in a similar boat). Have mainly used Ocado and Morrison's. Think they are both the same company but slightly different stuff. Always good service and substitution rare.

Angie169 · 22/04/2019 19:01

Tescos gets my vote , if you are only going to use it a few times just pay for the one of deliverys , average price between £3 -£5 depending on the time you want
If you will be using it for a while it's worth paying for a month £7.50 I think for as many delivers as you want ( one per day ) so you could get 30 deliverys in one month for £7.50.

YonWeeLassie · 22/04/2019 19:08

Worth knowing you can buy a delivery pass with Tesco clubcard points. For me it's ridiculously cheap. I live miles from a store and I can have someone else trudge round picking my shopping, loading it up and bringing it in to my kitchen for nothing.
As a long time home delivery shopper I've tried them all.
Ocado have very good intro offers and seldom substitute. Asda are awful and their website is dreadful. Morrisons never seem to have what I want.
I always go back to Tesco. They never quibble about refunds if anything is unsatisfactory. The only thing I would never buy online is fresh bread.
