Has anyone used domperidone for their baby's reflux?

I'm asking here there and everywhere but not had any feedback yet.

We are on ranitidine but the reflux has come back with a vengeance.

Omeprazole was horrific he screamed for 5 hours straight and infant gaviscon just causes constipation.

Next stop domperidone...?

We did, my own regret was not pushing for it sooner! Life changing - just needs to be closely monitored I believe.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 22/04/2019 10:03

Wow! Thanks, how long did it take to make a difference?

What had you tried before that

Yes, my first child had horrendous reflux. He was admitted to hospital and ended up on Infant Gaviscon, ranitidine, omeprazole AND domperidone concurrently. Domperidone wasn't particularly helpful in our case. Also studies have shown limited effectiveness in easing symptoms in babies.

We were desperate and willing to try anything so if I were you I would try it.
Was ranitidine initially effective? Has the dose been optimised? hugs for you - reflux can be such a strain on the whole family xx

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 22/04/2019 10:08

Thank you. He's on the max dose and I get him weighed regularly.

I think it's peaked because he's teething and had a growth spurt.
So the extra feeding and the acidity from the teething has exasperated it.

He was great for weeks but it's gone south.

He woke 16 times last night. I used a digital tally on my phone and pressed it each time he woke.
I wish I didn't, it felt so much worse knowing it was such a high number of wakes

DS is now 3 so was a while ago for us. He was on neocate milk, omeprazole, gaviscon, gripe water (for the wind) and domperidone all at the same time. I can’t remember the timescale for seeing a difference but maybe a week to 10 days? It is very very hard, DS was majorly sick with every feed and then continually in between Sad

Daffydillo · 22/04/2019 10:22

He had had ranitidine before that - stopped the pain a bit but the sickness was still awful

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 22/04/2019 11:13

He's not very sick. He's only sick small amounts often. I think it's more 'silent reflux'.

From what I've just read, domperidone only helps the vomiting?

Perhaps that won't work for us.

Are you seeing a paediatrician for the reflux?

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 22/04/2019 11:56

We see one for his heart condition so kind of, by proxy.
In fact we see one tomorrow which was why I was thinking about it.

I just googled and it looks like Dom is linked to cardiac arrest and since he has this heart thing I don't think I want to risk it.

guiltynetter · 22/04/2019 12:03

We are on a treatment plan from the paediatrician for my 7 month olds reflux (GORD) currently on highest dose of ranitidine and omeprazole which is working in a way.

domperidone is our next step but Im very against it and probably won't ask for it. DS had to have a ECG as there have been studies of it affecting heart rhythms in older people and my own GP said he would personally never give it to his own children. have a Google about the side effects and research been done into it recently.

guiltynetter · 22/04/2019 12:07

also I believe it works by emptying the stomach faster so that would help with sickness but my DS was never very sicky with his reflux anywsy.

Bundlebuns · 22/04/2019 12:13

Domperidone is associated with adverse cardiac effects so definitely avoid if your LO has heart problems. It was removed from over the counter sales due to cardiac risks. Nowhere further you can go with ranitidine if DS is on the maximum dose. What was the issue with omeprazole and how long did he take it for?
How old is DS? I always think that silent reflux is just like "regular" reflux minus the laundry problem. All the screaming, pain and distress is the same.

Daffydillo · 22/04/2019 12:30

DS did have to have an ECG prior to having it prescribed - I expect with existing heart problem it would be a no no.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 22/04/2019 12:43

He had an ECG last week, although I don't have the results yet. I don't want to use it if it has any effect on the heart.

He's JUS cut a tooth!!

No/kinda. Ds had really bad reflux and went thru every make of baby milk to no avail. I tried bf at 5 weeks and I had to take large amount of domperidone to get my supply established again. His reflux disappeared and so I wonder if he got some benefit of domperidone theough my milk.
