Can we talk about dog theft?

It is becoming increasingly apparant that dog theft is on the rise. Little seems to be done about it and most dogs are never found or returned to their owners. I think the scale is vast and relatively unknown to most people. I was totally unaware until my sisters two dogs were stolen and everyday I see more and more stories. Bring Dinky and Doris Home, Ruby and Beetle, Lets get Willow Home are just a few. If you have experienced dog theft can you tell your story here, I just want others to be aware how easy it is to lose your precious pets. By spreading the word we might be able to reunite people and their dogs, or better yet prevent it from happening again.

@GlubGlubGlub the dogs were a six hour drive away!

They won’t be divulging the whereabouts or why they were taken and by who but they have said the dogs were well cared die during the time they were missing.

The picture of the ops sister holding her two precious darlings is wonderful.

So so glad to hear your sister's dogs are back where they belong!

I have a terrier, a working breed. She's noisy and barky, but I don't think she'd bite a person, however she jumps and barks when people come up to us (she's also very pretty #notbiasedatall).

I talk up her aggression. Anyone who approaches us and tries to make a fuss of her, I tell them to keep their distance, that she bites etc, isn't sociable (that's true) and she is hard to handle (her breed are notoriously so).

I hope that talking up how unsociable she is keeps likely pet thieves at bay (I sometimes drop in that she's bad with housetraining too, just to make sure).

A beautiful cocker spaniel called Fern was also reunited this week after 6 years!!

Stolen when she was 18 months old, and then found wandering this week, taken to a vets to be scanned and because the owners had never given up hope and kept the microchip details up to date, she was reunited with her family. Had been used for breeding and had some skin issues but home after 6 years!

I know nothing about technology. Is it impossible to insert a gps chip in a pet rather than a simple microchip?

Witchonastick · 05/07/2019 14:01

I would imagine it would be, but thrives could attempt to cut it out! I know they used to cut off tattooed ears and I have seen reports of attempted microchip removal. Sad

*Thieves not thrives!

My dog was stolen several years ago and we got him back, purely by chance though. I've changed my name because this is quite identifying.

My husband took him to work and left him outside whilst he went in to make a drink, he was only there for a few minutes but came out to find that the fence had been lifted and he was gone. Initially he thought hed got himself out , so he looked around the vicinity but couldn't find him.
Long story sort, we tried everything to find him, doglost, breed specific groups were a big help, people contacted us from hundreds of miles away to say they'd look out for him. We door knocked, put many posts up in shops and on fb, etc.
Hed been gone for 6 months when we decided to get another dog, two days later dh was driving past a supermarket and saw him tied up outside. He waited with him and phoned the police. The owner came out but then ran away as soon as dh said the police were on their way. Luckily for us, when they reviewed the CCTV they knew him. We took our dog to the nearest vet who scanned his chip which proved he belonged to us so he came home with us!
The "owner " was arrested and charged, he said that hed bought him in a pub. The judge didn't believe him and he was convicted.

We were shocked to discover that a dog is only classed as a possession according to the law and as a result, due to the thief being a drink and drug addict, he was only asked to increase his contact with his probation officer.
