Hundreds of wasps

Seriously, wtf? In April?

My garden is full of them. I've been up since 6 am and they were already awake and out in force, loads out front, kamikaze throwing themselves at the front window. Dared have the windows open yesterday and had to gently encourage ten/fifteen of them back outside.

Didn't have a single one in the house last year until September-ish

Google seems to suggest that at this time of year there shouldn't be any established nests yet, and the ones that are around are Queens looking for somewhere to nest.

That can't be right surely? There can't be hundreds of queens in one garden?

Do I bother calling pest control or will they claim the Google line of them just being queens?

We have little bees going into the knots on the decking fence bit. DP noticed yesterday. Not seen that before

We are currently dealing with a wasp nest in our shed Sad I have a phobia of wasps as does DH so it’s not the best of jobs! I truly hate them with a passion!

There is one baxtard (well I am assuming it's only the one) in particular who keeps coming for my hair and face every damn time I go out in my back garden. I can't be doing with a whole summer of this.

It's because of climate change.

Victoria University insect ecologist Professor Phil Lester said the data showed that wasps thrived in warm, dry spring weather.

"The average global temperature is rising each year. We are therefore likely to see more wasp abundance in the future as our weather gets warmer."

This increase in wasp numbers was observed in Rothamsted in the United Kingdom, Lester said.

"The area experienced a change in climate in the 1990s, and its warmer spring weather has resulted in considerably higher numbers of wasps."

toothy I also have a phobia of wasps. Gardening was very difficult yesterday.

Lisette I hear you. I love my garden but I’ve been known to some tools and go indoors when one won’t leave me alone!! Bees I don’t mind at all, they just go about their business with a slow deep buzz. But with wasps it’s that high pitched angry frantic zzzzzZzzzz that I absolutely hate!

I had a ground nest in the garden last year. Sometimes they burrow into the soil to nest. Perhaps you can see where they are coming and going from? I left mine well alone, as they can get aggressive if you get too close.
